Flower Garden Cushion {Week 22/52}

My latest scrap inspired project is this cushion, which I’ve called Flower Garden. Quite apt really as my actual back garden is in overdrive at the moment.

Flower Garden Cushion

It started with some bias strips which I had left over from another project. I didn’t have a clear idea of how I wanted this to work, but decided that the strips would make excellent, strong (slightly too wide) flower stems.

Flower Garden - Beginning

If you have some bias binding left overs, perhaps this could be a good project for you to work on. I pressed the strips to create some curves and then arranged and appliqued them to my background fabric. My background is made up with 2 low volume F8 pieces I had left over from another quilt project. I just sewed them together, sliced them up, sewed those pieces together and then repeated again.

I could share the flower bloom pattern with you… that is, if I actually had a pattern. These were a little bit improvisational from designs I’d seen online.

I chose the fabric pieces from the top of the scrap tub and drew the flower shape with a silver gel pen. I then finger pressed along the silver line, dabbed a few dots of glue to the back of the flower shapes and adhered them to the tops of the stems. Sarah Fielke taught the silver gel pen method in her Craftsy class and I have done this ever since. I absolutely love it!

Flower Garden - Quilting

I traced the ovals blooms from the outline of my bobbin holder and the circular centre of the flowers is made by tracing the bottom of my Gutermann spool of thread.

Once the applique was finished, I basted some light weight batting to the back and did a little bit of hand quilting with Perle 8 cottons. I went a little crazy and ordered a whole heap of them on eBay, so now I have a rainbow of colours to choose from. Let me know if you’d like to buy some and I’ll send you the link to the eBay store where I buy my Perle 8 cotton.

Flower Garden Quilting 2

My cushion insert is a 14” one, so this is the size I made my final cushion. It has an envelope style back, which will make for easy washing (which I’m hoping won’t have to happen any time soon).

This scrappy Flower Garden Cushion has now joined the rest of my scrappy cushion family. These bright scrappy cushions certainly brighten up a cream couch, don’t they?
