I Heart You : Scrappy Coaster {Week 19/52}

With Valentine’s Day only a few weeks away, I’m sharing this fun little ‘I Heart You’ Scrappy Coaster tutorial… using scraps, of course. I love applique, and this is a reverse applique project.

I Heart You  Scrappy Coaster

The first step is to choose a number of red/pink strips from your scrap basket. They don’t all need to be the same width. Mine range from 1” to 2” in width.

Once you’ve chosen your strips, sew them all together to create a large square/rectangle. Press the seams all to one side.

Now it’s time to choose the outer (or top fabric). I used a red solid fabric which I had in my scrap tub, but any solid, tone on tone, or small print fabric would work nicely. It needs to be at least 6” x 8” (or a little larger, which you could trim down).

On a piece of paper or cardboard, draw a half heart shape. You can probably find heart shapes on the internet, but I just drew mine free-hand.

Cut out the half heart shape. Fold the red fabric in half and pin the half heart onto the red fabric, on the fold.

Cut around the heart shape and place the strips in the cut-out section.

Arrange the strip block until you’re pleased with the layout. Mine is slightly angled to the left.

Lay a piece of batting underneath, pin it all to hold in place, and sew around the heart. I used some red thread, feed dogs down and my darning foot. I sewed around the heart 3 times. I considered some hand quilting too, with white perle cotton, but in the end decided that it looked good as it was.

Trim the coaster down to the desired size (mine is 8” x 6”). Pin some backing fabric and sew on the single-fold binding.

A quick project which can be finished in a couple of hours – but a project which is effective and perfect to give someone on the upcoming love day.
