Super Scrappy Strip Cushion {Week 17/52}

After a good break over the Christmas season, I am finally ready to get back into some scrap-busting sewing projects.

I made a quilt using the gorgeous new range of fabric by Kate Spain called Sunnyside (which I can’t show you yet as it was a commissioned quilt for an Australian publication). And as a super scrap hoarder, I couldn’t bear to throw any of the fabric scraps… which I turned into this Super Scrappy Strip Cushion.

To make this cushion, I pieced strips of all different lengths and widths together into 4 rows. I then trimmed the strips to approximately 4.5” wide by 16” long. Sewed them together to make a large patchwork piece.

I then pressed some fusible fleece to the back and used some mint coloured DMC Perle 8 Cotton to hand quilt the cushion top. The quilting lines varied in distance – between 1/4” and 1/2” …ish.

Here’s a close up of the quilted top (before I made it into a cushion).

This was one of those projects which I kept for the evenings. We’ve had visitors and a lot going on over the festive Christmas season, so large swing projects in my sewing room were out of the question. This was a small portable project which I was able to work on… and still remain social.

And here is a picture of the back of the cushion top before I sewed it, into a cushion.

I was going to attempt a zipper back… but then didn’t. One day, I will get around to sewing a zipper. For now though, an envelope style closure at the back works just fine.

If you make a Super Scrappy Strip Cushion, please share your pictures in the 52 Week Scrap Challenge Facebook Page.

I’m working towards covering my couch with scrappy, hand made cushions. Handmade cushions are just … homely.

  4. Fantastic! I have been debating about that fabric and I think you may have just convinced me to add it to my stash. Now I just need to decided which precut I want :)
