Best Friends Cushion {Week 24/52}

I always join Block of the Month (BOM) or Quilt Along (QAL) challenges with the best of intentions. Those beginning few blocks are always on track and I look forward to the next ones… but after about the 4th month, interest wanes, new projects move to the forefront and the BOM which I was so excited about has been forgotten.

I was going through a box of “sewing stuff” in my sewing room last week and came upon a few blocks which I’d made in the ASWC – Modern QAL. I wondered where the Quilt Along was up to and thought that maybe I would have time to catch up. But then I “got real” and knew that it wouldn’t happen, so I decided to use the blocks in another project.

Best Friends Cushion

Best Friend is designed by Angela Pingel of the Cut To Pieces Blog and was the first block I made in the ASWC ModernQAL. It’s a fun block and I really enjoyed playing with the fabrics, which led me to make a whole quilt with this block.

I really love the elephant print in the single block and it’s too lovely to just forget in a box, so I added a border and turned the Best Friends block into a cushion. As this block wasn’t going to be used, I figure I’ll count it as a scrap and this is project number 24 in my scrap challenge.

Best Friends Cushion Quilting

This cushion is heavily quilted as it will live on the couch in the family room… and no doubt will be sat on, rested on and used in pillow fights by my children. To keep some of it’s shape, heavy quilting was a must.

If you’d like to have a go at making this cushion with some of your scrap fabrics, the instructions on how to make the block can be found HERE.

Here’s the quilt I made with this block. It looks a little scrappy even though I used a layer cake of Summerville.
