Squid Game Pillow + Pattern

If you're a fan of Squid Game, the South Korean series on Netflix, you might like to try creating a Squid Game pillow like this one, with my free pattern.

The Squid Game is a South Korean survival drama series created for Netflix. Cash strapped players are invited to play a series of children's games in the hope of winning the prize money of 45 billion Won (I googled and it works out to around $38,000,000).

This show is not for the faint of heart. It's a wild and gory ride.  I watched it with my teens over a few days. The violence of the first episode was quite shocking, but as the series continues, the violence become less of a focus as we discover the characters and their reasons for being involved in the game.

My eldest teen asked if I could make something Squid Game for him. We all know that teenagers aren't usually receptive of all the quilty stuff their mothers make, so this caused me to drop everything and throw some ideas around with him.

My love of making cushions prevailed and we decided on a cushion for his room, basing the design on the card that the players receive when invited to the game.

We started out by trying to work out how to create the circle triangle and square shapes so that they were all the same size. We played around with a few different programs and I finally decided on EQ8 for the win!

Once I had the templates printed, I traced them out onto some heat n bond, fused to black fabric and cut them out directly on the lines. The next step was the line up the shapes on my background fabric so that they were straight and evenly spaced.

Once I was happy with the placement, removed the backing papers and fused in place. I appliqued around the edges with black thread. It probably didn't need to be stitched down, but I wanted to make sure it was going to stay.

I thought about how I'd quilt this and was initially going to go with straight lines. Next thing I knew, I was stippling (which is my favourite way to quilt). I quite like how it turned out and the texture is really lovely.

I found this fabric black fabric with red creatures in my stash so used it for my pillow backing. I must like my kid as I even included a zipper.

If you would like to create your own Squid Game pillow, here are the templates which I used to create mine. These are the size which I used on my pillow, but if you'd like something smaller, you can just reduced the print size percentage.

As always, if you create this project using my pattern, I'd love to see it. Please send through a picture or tag me on Instagram @sameliasmum

  2. Love your creativity journey to making this cushion. So clever! Squid Game not for me but my youngest daughter ( 33) loved it as she is a SFX Prosthesist and loves working out how they have done it lol. It vaguely reminds me of a non gory film called "They Shoot Horses Don't They" about poor people entering a dance a thon to win money.
