Last week - or possibly a fortnight now that I think about it, I shared the progress on my big hexagon quilt top. I've been at work alot this past couple of weeks so I haven't yet had time to do anything with that quilt.
What I have to share today is a great big hexie cushion that I made with the leftover hexagon shapes. I'd cut so many that I had plenty to make a second smaller project.
Lke my quilt top, these hexagons were hand pieced, mainly in the evenings, on the couch, while watching a good show. I used my large hexagon template to cut the fabric shapes and then a ruler and mechanical pencil to draw my stitching lines, 1/4" inside of the edges.
I put these all together into a square-ish shape. Sandwiched them and then quilted with some gorgeous Aurifil 50wt thread in golden colours. I used my walking foot on my Bernina and went to town with the straight line quilting.

At first, I quilted straight lines in one direction. I enjoyed this simple, repetitive process so much that I then quilted in the opposite direction. The lines are approximately 1/2" apart and the quilting gives this pillow a lovely textured finish.

After trimming the square, I added a back to my pillow using a shirt I'd found on the clearance rack at Kmart. It was a lovely linen shirt and I knew that I'd never actually wear the shirt, but use the fabric for something. It's quite a large cushion in which I used a European Pillow insert. It now lives on the couch and is great for mid afternoon naps.
Do you buy items of clothing etc from clearance racks, knowing that you're going to use them for something else, not just their intended use?
