Yellow

February is yellow month in the Rainbow Scrap Challenge and I have really enjoyed playing with my yellow scrap fabrics. At first, I did wonder if I'd have enough yellow scraps to create much of anything.

After digging through my scrap basket (and when I say basket, I mean one of those tall laundry baskets), I discovered a fair few yellow bits and pieces. Some of these fabrics are quite old and so, while playing with them, I enjoyed little trips down memory lane trying to work out what I'd originally used the fabrics for.

My first RSC21 project will be my hexie quilt (picture up top). I appliqued my scrappy yellow hexie flowers to the black and white background squares. They're quite striking, don't you think?

For my second RSC21 project, I made a bunch of yellow scrappy quarter log cabin blocks. My yellows range from warm caramelly golds to light pastel yellows.  These are trimmed down to 6" square.

I'm looking forward to the March colour announcement.

In other news, I just signed up to this $5 for 5 months deal with Creativebug. I've been wanting to learn how to draw and I know it's like any other skill, you need to practise, practise, practise. Creativebug has daily inspiration which will lead (hopefully) to daily practise. Here's hoping, right?

  1. I love your yellow hexies on the black/white fabrics. That was a great choice. I'm curious, did you leave the papers in for the applique or remove them first? I have a similar project which I've put of tackling because of the papers.

    1. Hi Susan, once I put together the hexie flower, I give it all a good press, especially over the edges to make sure of a nice sharp seam. I then take out the papers, pin to the background fabric and applique. You could probably press again after you take the papers out, but it's not necessary. They hold their shape very well.

    2. Hi Susan, I make my own hexies and what ever size, no matter, but a good idea is to use cardboard like a tissue box, Then I cut them out, and with a hole punch, punch a hole in the middle, or off center, later you can remove the hexies with a crochet hook, or anything really. I reuse my hexies.

    1. Thanks Cathy. These have been lots of fun to make with my old scraps. I have lots of prepared hexies in a tin so it's an easy project to pick up when I want some slow stitching :)

    1. Yes it really is. I don't seem to use enough yellow in my projects to have much of a stash.

I signed up and have looked at a few classes. What's good about these is that they all seem quite short and easy to start and stop when you have some spare time.

    1. Thanks Sarah. I'm really quite pleased I joined RSC this year.
It gives me an excuse to sort out my scrap tub - I even got the kids involved (much to their dismay) in helping sort out the colours and to bag them up.

  15. Yellow is one of my top three favorite colors, and what you're doing with those scraps is perfect! I am especially fond of your yellow quarter cabins because you've used a nice range of hues and values. If you'd limited your yellow palette, the design wouldn't be nearly as effective. Well done, you! Keep enjoying.

    1. Thanks Linda. They were fun to make. Over the weekend, I tipped over the whole scrap tub and got to work sorting out the colours and throwing out pieces that were too small. I even found more yellow! Hope you had a lovely weekend :)

  17. Oh, you are sure working on a couple of lovely projects. Yes, those hexie flowers are very striking on the b/w backgrounds. And any kind of log cabin block is a great idea if you ask me. I enjoyed looking at your sweet mix of fabrics.

  18. It's always good to try other skills. Working other parts of our brains is supposed to help ward off Alzheimer's. You've got some very pretty yellow blocks cooking along too. Great job!
