Sushi Pillows

My 13yo son is what I imagine the majority of sons are like when it comes to their mothers sewing, fabric, craft addiction.

Tolerance and zero interest.

So it really surprised me when I was looking at a wall of fabric and my son piped in and asked that we buy fabric to make something for him. Say what?!? Followed quickly by, yes of course we can!

This miraculous even happened in a Walmart store when we were holidaying in Hawaii. We were at the Walmart near the huge Ala Moana shopping centre in Oahu. We love visiting Walmart and it seems, so does every other Aussie holidaymaker we "hear" while there.

For Aussie friends, Walmart can be described as a mixture of Kmart + Coles + Spotlight. It has a little bit of everything, including bolts of fabric and a cutting counter.

My son saw this musubi (sushi) print fabric and just HAD TO HAVE IT.

It has sat on my fabric shelf since we got back from our holiday in May. Last week, I replaced a couple of our sleep pillows, so I decided to make a couple of quilted pillows for his bed with the inserts of the old ones. Perfect! He's happy with his new pillows and I'm happy that I got to make something for him that he likes.

It's a win-win.

We ate some warm Spam Musubi when were in Hawaii and it wasn't too bad. I probably wouldn't eat it often, but I can see the appeal in how easy it is to eat on-the-go.

Spam musubi is a popular snack and lunch food in Hawaii composed of a slice of grilled Spam on top of a block of rice, wrapped together with nori in the tradition of Japanese omusubi. Inexpensive and portable, Spam musubi are commonly found near cash registers in convenience stores all over Hawaii.

  1. SPAM?!? You lost me. ack. But those pillow covers are awesome. I know how much your heart swelled when your son asked you to sew for him.

    1. Thank you. Hahaha spam is very polarising - it seems people either love it or hate it.

  2. We have tinned Spam in the uk - usually sliced and either eaten cold or fried. I've not eaten it for years but it's still popular. It's name comes from 'spiced ham' but in the UK it was 'Special Processed American Meat' during WW2, when there was a meat shortage. I just googled and it was also made in the UK until about 1997 and now we import it from Denmark. Before I forget - I loved your cushions :)

    1. Thank you for stopping by. My husband is English as he remembers eating spam once or twice when he was younger too.

  3. Yep. Son's are a whole different breed. No interest at all. I like Spam. Have not had it in years. Bought some to fix for my grandson later on. Pillows look great. We are just pleased when sons like what we make for them, is SO true. I can relate.

    1. Sons can be both tricky and very easy. I think it depends on their mood ;-)

  4. Your son has good taste. Perhaps he may learn to sew himself oneday. The cushions are awesome. Spam! Omg I haven't seen or eaten that for over 50 years! It was introduced during the war years as ration pack food for soldiers I think.

    1. Spam is HUGE in Hawaii and is plays a part in their cultural cuisine. I don’t think I ever had it before we ate it there, but I think it tastes a bit like devon.

As for the sewing son, I’ve tried to get him interested, but without much luck. Hubby likes to work with wood in his spare time, and I think Sam leans towards that hobby.

    1. Thanks Shez. I hope you get to visit Hawaii too one day. You would love it. The weather is beautiful, the people are friendly and there are lots of Aussies there as it's only a 10hr flight. Faster than the drive between Syd to Melbourne :)
