Bittersweet Symphony Quilt {Progress}

Bittersweet Symphony is a song by Britpop band, The Verve - "Cause it's a bittersweet symphony this life. Trying to make ends meet, trying to find some money then you die…”

The lyrics sound a bit depressing, don’t you think? Can I just say that this quilt, which I’ve decided to call “Bittersweet Symphony” is anything, but, depressing! It’s got a tonne of bright, happy colour which just pops on the dark background.

Bittersweet is a lovely fabric range by Sue Daley Designs for Riley Blake Fabrics. It’s bold saturated colour and fun prints have made this a favourite range for me. I’ve made a few smaller projects with Bittersweet (ie Skittles Pillow and the Scrappy Churn Dash Pillow) and started a quilt a few months ago too… but then we went on our big US holiday, and then it was the end of the school year and all the busy craziness that entails. The Christmas and New Year period allowed me to catch little snippets of time to play at finishing the borders. Last night, I finished the remainder of the border appliqué (though I’d yet to sew it on to the quilt).

It’s been a fun quilt to make. I’ve had a lot of time to think about it, I’ve been able to add bits and pieces as I go, rather than my usual quilt process of deciding on a design, work out the details and then making it after working out the pattern details in advance.

I can’t decide how to quilt it though, so any advice you can give me would be truly appreciated. I was thinking hand quilting? With variegated Perle 8 cotton thread? What do you think?

    1. Thanks Shez. I still haven't sewn on that last border strip. Honestly, I have the attention of a goldfish right now :)

  2. So bright and happy, great job Anorina. My elder son and his bride had Bittersweet Symphony playing as they walked down the aisle after their marriage ceremony. Always brings me happy memories of a veryspecial day.

    1. That's a lovely memory. I think we had a Stevie Wonder song after our ceremony. Someone had just sung it on Australian Idol and I'd never heard it, but really liked it. Funny how we choose things, isn't it? Have a lovely weekend xx

    1. Thanks Leeanne. I normally go with a white background, so this was completely opposite to what I'm used to... but I am really glad that I did go dark :)
