Megan’s Star Block {Tutorial}

Welcome to the next stop in the And Sew We Craft Modern Quilt Along.
July is my month, and I’m sharing the Megan’s Star block. When I flicked through Modern Blocks by Susanne Woods, this block really caught my eye. I love fussy cutting and this block was the perfect way to showcase a favourite fabric.

Megan's Star

This block is designed by Alethea Ballard who blogs at, Maverick Quilts.
Here are the steps on how to make this lovely block.

Fabric Requirements:

Megan's Star - Fabric Requirements

1. Large print fabric for centre – 1 square, 4 ¾” x 4 ¾”  (fussy cut)
This was actually my second fabric choice. I tried to fussy cut the first one, but it didn’t appear as centred as I would have liked, so I created a template.

I cut a piece of cardboard to the right size. I then cut a little window in the cardboard so I could see how the print would appear.

2. Orange (Star Points) – Cut 2 squares 4” x 4” and then cut them diagonally to yield 4 triangles.

3. Yellow (Star Points) – Cut 8 squares 2 ½” x 2 ½”

4. White – Cut 8 rectangles 3 ½” x 4 ½”

5. White – Cut 4 rectangles 1 ½” x 4 ½”

6. Orange (corners) – Cut 4 squares 2 ½” x 2 ½”

Construction:
With right sides together, sew 2 centre triangles to opposite sides of the centre square. Press and turn the seam allowances.
Sew the remaining 2 centre triangles to the other sides of the centre square.
Press the square and trim to 6 ½” x 6 ½”

Megan's Star 1

Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner of the 2 ½” x 2 ½” squares.
Yellow (star point) – with right sides together, place a square on a corner of the 3 ½” x 4 ½” background white rectangle.

Megan's Star 2

Stitch on the line. Press. Repeat on the other side of the rectangle. Press.

Megan's Star 3

Repeat this process to make 4 units.

Orange (corner) – place a square with right sides together on a 3 ½” x 4 ½” background white rectangle. Stitch on the line. Trim and press.
Make two left units and two right units.
Lay out all of block units as per the image below (please note that the bottom yellow points is upside down – WHOOPS!! Make sure it’s the right way around to complete the star).

Megan's Star 4

Assemble the block – sew the two side points to the centre fussy cut block. Press
Sew the top units together to make a row. Press.
Sew the bottom units together to make a row. Press.
Sew the three rows together.
Press and admire your handiwork.
