Groove is in the Heart

Welcome to my stop on the "Hearts on Fire" blog hop.

It's my first blog hop of the year, so I thought it was a good time to crack open a new F8 bundle which had been sitting on my shelf for a couple of years.

The blog hop, hosted by Just Let Me Quilt, inspired us to create a project with a heart and the only rule was that the hearts couldn't be the traditional red colour.

I had a look around Pinterest and saw a funky wall quilt with appliqued hearts of all different shapes and sizes. I really liked the look but decided that I'd make mine into a great big cushion as it's more practical.

With this varied sized heart idea in mind, I fused heat n bond to the back of some fabric, folded it in half and drew my half-heart shape. Cut it out. Then thought, I could layer some hearts, so refolded that piece, drew another smaller half heart from the fold outwards and cut that out. Two hearts, for the price of one!

I then went ahead and cut background squares so give me an idea of the size of hearts I'd need. The big ones are 8.5" and the smaller ones are 4.5" which are perfect for a fat eighth.

Some hearts are layered and some have the cutout shape from the middle. I machine appliqued them to the background with black thread which I think helps define them a little better too.

I added a thin outside border and then sandwiched and quilted in the  ditch. I didn't have a large enough insert, so I made one.

I had a 2 pack of the cheap pillows from Kmart (I think they're $4-$5 for 2) and opened them up and removed all of the polyfill. I then cut the seams of the two cases, measured and squared them up and sewed, refilled and closed it up to end up with a 24" pillow insert.

This cushion is backed with a 1/2 metre piece that I had in my stash since the beginning of my quilting journey.

  1. I love it! The fabrics and design are so bright and happy. I have some of that fabric in my stash. I may have to make my own version of this. Using the cheap pillows polyfil and making your own pillow forms is a great idea. Thanks for sharing in the hop ... :) Pat
