Circus Samples - Blockstar Prints

As some of you may already know, I work at my local quilt store. I teach classes, but also work in the retail side. It's a fun job which I really, REALLY enjoy. I get to chat with people about fabric and quilts all day long.

We got some new fabric in the store - Blockstar Fabrics designed by Christopher Hill of Batik Australia. The prints include spots, circus tent stripes and lollipop designs which are all designed to work together with what is ultimately, simple (but very effective) piecing.

I made a couple of small samples for the store. This one below is from one of the patterns designed by the manufacturer. I used a variety of colours, but you can imagine how great this would look in a simple two or 3 colour combination.

With some leftover lollipop pieces, I just joined them together to form full "circles" or "lollipops". Then I thought I'd be a little bit fancy and quilted this using invisible thread (Aurifil) outlining the alternating curves of the print. It's given the quilt a lovely effect and looks almost like I pieced the curves, rather than cheat with the quilting.

I used cotton batting which I had on-hand, but some polyester batting would have given this some extra lovely loft.

Finished with some black and white strip binding - because it's my favourite way to finish a quilt.

  1. Wow! Bright and fun, great fabrics. The binding is perfect. Black and white stripes just work, everywhere almost. LOL
