A Broken Dish and Coasters (SHQAL)

Happy Scrappy Monday! Today, we're sharing the 'Quick Broken Dishes' block in the Scrappiness is Happiness Quilt Along. This is a fun block and great for mixing and matching a bunch of scraps.

The block wasn't constructed as I'd expected. It was put together using squares which were then trimmed back, rather than starting with triangles. Instead of throwing out the scraps, I used some scrap backing and batting, lined up the scrappy triangles and had fun stitching them down to make coasters.

We never seem to have enough coasters around here... or I can never seem to find one when I have my mug of tea needing a place to rest.

The Scrappiness is Happiness book is by Lori Holt of Bee in my Bonnet and includes 32 Scrappy Quilts to make. It's available from the Fat Quarter Shop along with a huge variety of Lori Holt designed fabrics you can use to make this or any of her quilts.

Here are a few links to the various bits and pieces:

  1. How pretty! You used such happy colors in your block. One of my earliest quilt makes, back in 1990-something was to join a Mystery quilt activity with a local quilt shop - my one and only mystery quilt experience. We made a quilt with Broken Dishes blocks. Mine was in Amish-colored solids, and was one of the first quilts I free motion quilted on my domestic machine using metallic thread! Oh my. What was I thinking? Well, the quilt is long-gone. Donated to a charity I think. But I still like the block. And what you did with the bitty leftovers is perfect!

  2. Your coasters are a great way to use up those triangle off cuts.
