Marvellous Mini Challenge

The August Island Batik ambassador challenge was all about mini quilts. We were tasked with making a mini quilt measuring anywhere between 12" and 24".

I have a fondness for this applique leaf shape and would love to make a large bed size quilt... one day.

The leaf shape is 4" long and just under 2.5" wide which made it perfect for use with a pre-cut 2.5" strip set.

In my treasure box of goodies from Island Batik, I had the 2.5" strip set of Chatilly by Kathy Engle for Karen Overton of The Quilt Rambler.

These pinks, purples and blues are just lovely, don't you think? Beautiful rich jewel tones which really "pop" against the light background.

Once the petals were all fused in place, I used some absolutely beautiful Aurifil 28wt cotton thread to applique/quit the petals into place. I haven't really used 28wt thread all that much and tried it out with my Aurifil welcome challenge. The 28wt cotton thread has such a lovely sheen to it and the overall effect is well defined and really quite something.

Making a mini quilt is such a good way to play around with new techniques or products and having the satisfaction of having finished a project. Thank you to Island Batik for setting this fun challenge for August.

The fabric, batting, thread and needles were generously supplied by the following companies: Island Batik Aurifil Thread, Hobbs Batting, Schmetz Needles and the wool/alpaca pressing mat by Prairie Spirit Alpacas
