Breeze on Lee Quilt

I started working on this quilt quite a few months ago and now I'm so glad to be able to share that 'Breeze on Lee' is my latest quilt project published in the April/May 2021 issue of Homespun Magazine.

And not only is it published in the magazine, it's the cover quilt. Yay!!

As a child, I remember spending lot's of summer mornings helping my grandmother paint the front fence in white. It's a breeze block front fence which was all the rage in the 1950's which was when the house was built.

I decided to design and create a quilt as a memory of all those summer mornings spent with my gran painting that fence.

This pattern is excellent for layer cakes and this size quilt used up 50 squares. I'd like to have made it bigger, but the deadline was looming and I ran out of time. The fabrics are old Cotton & Steel layer cakes.

The quilt blocks are needle turn applique and very portable. I spent quite a few hours sitting with mum in hospital, sewing them up. Once the blocks are prepared, all you need to applique them are needle, thread and some small scissors. Great for on-the-go sewing.

Homespun Magazine is available nationally at newsagents and supermarkets and craft stores. Internationally, digital copies can be purchased through Zinio, Google Play or Apple Newsstand.

  11. Whoo-hoo! So happy for your quilt to be selected for publication in "Homespun," and to make the cover is a real coup! That's great! I think I remember you posting previously about painting your Gran's fence, and being inspired to make a quilt. What a wonderful memory, and tribute to that special remembrance. It's a lovely quilt. Well done!

  12. Gorgeous! Such great fabric choices as well as beautiful handwork, and the quilting is amazing, it really gives the blocks dimension, almost like wreaths of twisted rope.
