Blossoms on Blue : Quilted Bag

Introducing my Blossoms on Blue quilted bag. It's a good size bag, perfect for holding library books or some groceries. I may use it to hold my yarn and my new crochet project.

Starting yesterday for FNSI, I used my Crafters Edge Crossover II machine to cut out 40 x 5" tumblers. I used a batik charm pack and the machine cut through these in a flash. I've never used batik fabric before and I have to say that every time I pressed the work, the smell of the fabric reminded me of the art rooms in my old high school (from 20 years ago).

As the charm pack was made up of print doubles, I split them in half to use as each side of the bag. After quilting both sides, I trimmed the two quilted pieces down to 16" x 18". It was ready to assemble at that stage, but I couldn't help feeling that it needed "something" more.

I left it overnight and went back to it today. Sometimes, you just have to sleep on it to be inspired, right?

I decided to applique some flowers with the Large Flower die - choosing the fabric to make the blooms, which would suit the blue background probably took longer than any other part of the process.

The circle centre in this die set is small, so I chose a larger centre circle from the circle die set. The fabric was light and it lost its brightness when placed on top of the pink, so I used that same circular die to cut out plain white circles to place underneath it. They were perfectly the same size and were invisibly snuggled under the floral fabric.

The straps are made with a cream cotton tape and the lining of the bag is made with a cutesy print from my stash.

I'm so pleased with my Blossoms on Blue Quilted Bag and how much fun it was to make with the Crafters Edge Crossover II.

  1. A great bag - I've never heard of a Crafters Edge Crossover machine before - but you've certainly put it to good use.

    1. Thank you Susan. It's a fun machine to work with and because we place the cutting die exactly on the fabric which we want cut, it's not very wasteful.

  2. LOVE this bag Anorina! I requested the tumbler and large flower dies and some others too, but they haven't arrived and I have so many ideas for making stuff, so I hope they are sent soon so I can get started on more projects using the Crafter's edge dies.

    1. Hopefully yours arrive soon. These are fun dies to work with and I wasn't originally planning on using the flower with the tumbler, but I'm glad I did. Crafters Edge have so many great dies that it's hard to choose. I want to make so many things!

  3. Great bag! I almost requested those flowers because they remind me of Dahlia flowers which is my eldest daughters name, but I just couldn't think of a particular project. I love how you used them and the tumblers look like a lot of fun!

    1. Oh my goodness, Dahlia is such a beautiful name. I wasn't sure what I'd use them for when I ordered the dies, but as I am so far away (and postage is prohibitive), I am only getting the one shipment so I had to order a variety of dies to use through the year. It'll be fun to play with everything and see what I come up with.

  5. How fun for you to be playing with a new fabric tool! Between the tumbler shapes as background, and the daisy and circle shapes, you did a great job making this bag. I'm sure those batiks cut easily. Though I'm no longer a fan of batiks - I think the hand is stiff - it sure works well as a bag. I hope you get lots of use out of it, and compliments too!

    1. It really is a fun new toy to play with and I like that I can place the die, right where I want to cut, so there's less fabric waste. Some of these machines can be very wasteful.
This was my first go at sewing with batiks and honestly, I don't think I'd make a quilt with this fabric. It's very stiff and crunchy and I wonder how the colour will hold when washed. Hope you're well!

  9. I love your bag!!! The tumblers are so close in color/value that I didn't even realize they were tumblers, just saw the movement. Maybe too because my eye was drawn straight to the flowers. Perfect color and proportionate sizes. Fantastic.
