Scrappy Quarter Log Cabins

Yesterday was a good day. My kids went back to their first day back at school after the longggggg summer holidays. They finished school at the start of December 2020 and only went back at the start of February. I don't remember school holidays being that long in my day.

So with the house all nice and quiet and nowhere in particular to be, I sat down with my cup of coffee and had a look at some of my favourite blogs. I came across this post by Sarah of Confessions of a Fabric Addict, about her gorgeous new scrappy blue string quilt and was TOTALLY inspired to get into my sewing room and sew, sew, sew.

I decided to go small-ish as I don't have a lot of long scraps (strips) of fabric. I started with a low volume 2.5" square for my centre and worked from there. At the start the blocks were a little bit haphazard in their colours and prints and then they kind of "morphed" into colour order. Reminded of the beautiful formal gardens we saw on our trip to England a couple of years ago. The English certainly have a way with their planting out in gorgeously organised blocks of colour.

I trimmed my blocks down to 5" square and once I'd made 16 of them, I put them all together and spray basted them to a piece of batting.

I thought about quilting lots of straight lines, but then a momentary wobble took over me and I spiral quilted the panel.

It will probably turn into a cushion, but I think I might play around with the top a little bit more before then.

Thanks to Sarah for the inspiration and the return of the sew-jo xx
