OMG July {Finish}

Though July seems to have flown, I had to go back through my blog to see what I'd decided my OMG challenge would be... and it felt like years since I wrote that post. Are you feeling this "time flying/yet dragging" feeling too?

Anyways, my goal for July was to finish the applique and stitching of the large central block in my "Gossip in the Garden" quilt. I'd decided to remake this block and I'm very pleased that I did. My machine applique is so much faster (and neater) than my needle turn applique.

It's a gloomy and rainy day, so I had my assistant out to help hold the board so I could get a photo of my block. My little assistant, who has been my constant go-to helper, since she was little is now as tall as I am. Give it a few more months and my little assistant will be taller than me.

I used heat n bond to fuse the pieces to the background fabric. I'd bought a roll of it a few years ago and it's kept me going for all this time. I've probably got a few metres left and it feels as though the sticky stuff isn't as sticky as it used to be. I'll fuse it to the fabric and then remove the paper and fuse to the background - unless I sew the pieces within hours, the glue starts to give way and pieces fall off.

Has anyone had this experience?

Does heat n bond begin to lose it's "stick" with age?

  1. Pretty central block....looking forward to seeing this progress. Your helper is certainly growing up into quite the "young lady".

  2. Beautiful blocks you've worked on . Such a pretty helper you have and not so little.
    I've never used Heat n Bond . Always use viseoflex....

  3. Beautiful job on your machine applique, Anorina -- and it's so nice to see your helper in the photo! They do grow up so fast -- talk about time flying and dragging at the same time; that's parenting in a nutshell!

  4. I was struck by your words - "time flying, yet dragging." Don't we know it?! The days pass slowly but the months pass quickly. I don't know how in the world that's possible. Sorry to hear what's happened with your Heat 'n Bond. I've never heard of this, but I'm wondering if it has to do with humidity? Is it stored in an air-conditioned house? Your block is lovely, and I find it interesting that you're able to machine appliqué prettier than by hand, especially after seeing your lovely embroidered words. Certainly the machine version is faster. And don't you have the most adorable assistant! She looks about the right age to learn lots of this sort of making herself. Is she?

  6. It’s gorgeous! And, yes, like everything else, even heat'n bond ages.

  7. Fusibles do get old. They stop adhering or you can't get paper off. I have had to throw rolls out. I would say a year is probably maximum. Brand doesn't matter.

  8. I have some Heat N Bond that is old as the hills and the end that is exposed sometimes comes away from the paper. But as long as it will adhere long enough for me to do my stitching I will continue to use it.

  11. Great finish! I've also noticed that my Heat-n-Bond (from about 5 years ago) lost its "sticky" near the end of the bolt. I'm due for another bolt soon, but might try to split it with my sister so I can use it before it goes unsticky.
