Orange Peel Temperature Quilt 2020

Now is the time to do those things that we've always wanted to do, but never found the time (or inclination).

For me, one thing which I've always wanted to make was a temperature quilt. After seeing a few great new temperature quilt blocks appearing on insta, I decided to just jump in and make one too.

I visited the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) website to download the daily list of data for my area. It's a very detailed list with all sorts of information including rainfall, wind speeds, direction etc, but I opted to only use the low and high temperatures for each day. I have the numbers for each day starting 1 January 2020 until 31 March 2020.

Next step was to choose my colours and fabrics. At first I was going to go up by  lots of 5 degrees C, but there didn't seem to be much variation in our temperatures at the start of this year. I guess all of that bushfire smoke blocked out the hot summer sun.

I changed it to changing colours for every 3 degrees - which I hope will give me an overall more colourful and varied result.

For the blocks, I was initially going to applique circles or squircles, but again, in these times of doing those things that we've been putting off with excuses, I decided to use a leaf template and will make an orange peel style temperature quilt.

I'm using some very thin interface to turn out my leaf (or peel) shapes and can make a bunch of these in different colours so that they're all ready to applique to the background 'low temperature' square.

Now that all of the main 'brain work' is done, I can enjoy the slow sewing and catch up the past few months of temperatures.

    1. Thanks Maria. I figured this would suit two projects that I've wanted to make, in one quilt :)

  4. I love this idea for a temperature quilt. I have always wanted to make one for current year plus one for the year of my birth just for a fun comparison but I've never gotten around to it. Like I said...I'm inspired by your idea.

  5. This is by far the best idea that I have seen. I crocheted a Temperature afghan a few years ago. It was ugly, LOL!, but warm.

    1. I think we're having a cooler year than normal. I only have one day over 40C on the chart - I'm sure we used to have hotter days than this when I was younger.

    1. Shez!! So lovely to see you. I hope you're well my friend.
I'm looking forward to seeing how this turns out too - it'll certainly be different to all the ones I've seen done by quilters in the northern hemisphere. Thank you for stopping by xx

  9. Your temperature quilt is going to be lovely. What a great idea using the leaf template. I am making one as well, and I found I had to change colour every two degrees to give enough variation as our range is only 0-30.

    1. Yay! Temp quilts all round. Oooh I wonder if I should have gone up two degrees also. I guess I'll see how it goes for now and maybe change it up next year :) Have a lovely weekend x
