Smitten Quilt Update - OMG End-March 2020

Gosh, isn't she pretty? I honestly don't know how many photos I've taken of this quilt. The number is definitely in the hundreds.

At the start of march, my goal was to finish the last few EPP blocks for my Smitten Quilt (the quilt that has been in progress for a thousand years...)

I'm happy to say that not only did I finish those last few blocks, but I hand sewed the quilt top together.
And then sewed together the backing fabric.
And sandwiched my quilt layers.
And basted the quilt.
And have stitched in the ditch.
Yipeeeeee!

I am now in the process of adding some big stitch hand quilting embellishment to this quilt. I'll use my Aurifil 12 weight threads in all sorts of colours. This is a fun part of the process and something I can do while I watch telly in the evenings.

Thanks to Elm Street Quilts for hosting the One Monthly Goal (OMG) challenge and keeping us quilters on track with our goals and inspired to keep creating.

Go and check out how everyone else has fared in their OMG March 2020 challenges.

  3. Oh well done! Last year I finally finished a huge EPP hexagon quilt that I had been working on and off for about five years, the feeling was amazing. This is wonderful, I hope you get lots of enjoyment from using it. x

    1. Thanks Kay. It's been very slow going but I am very pleased that I've made it. There are so many beautiful EPP quilts out there and some people (somehow) seem to be very quick at making them. I'll be hand quilting for a while longer, but I'll enjoy it, especially now as the weather is cooling down quickly.

    1. Thank you!! The quilting is quite fun and I'm enjoying the process of deciding how I'll quilt each little section and in which colours. There are some great tutorials on YouTube for big stitch quilting (for when you'd like to have a try).

  8. Very lovely and your big quilting will be just perfect to finish it off. What needles do you find best for the thicker thread?

    1. I generally use embroidery needles for this type of quilting. They're quite strong and the eye is big enough to feed that thread through (well the first few attempts anyways). I bought some "Klasse Gold Eye Hand Needle Sharps" (sz 5-10) from BigW last week and have found these to be really good too. They're long and strong.

    1. Thanks Ondrea. It's certainly been one of my slowest projects - or maybe I'm just very a very slow EPPer. Hope you're well xx

  11. I admire your patience! The result is wonderful, so, yes, I admire your quilt too! You have incorporated so many hexagon arrangements that you've lifted this one way off the usual ground of Grandma's garden.

  15. What a labour of love this quilt has been. It really is a beauty. I prefer the longer projects too and usually never tire of the hand stitching part. Definitely worthy of a hundred photos! Stay safe now.
