QUILTING: It's Not Easy Being Green

I have a new quilt to share here with you today. The pattern is a freebie from the lovely people at the Fat Quarter Shop called 'Fat Quarter Flowers'. In my version, I decided to name my quilt 'It's Not Easy Being Green' as a tribute to Kermit the Frog. Remember that song?

The Fat Quarter Flowers pattern is such a lovely pattern to work with. It's perfect for a fat quarter bundle coupled with a coordinating background fabric. One of the hardest things about making this quilt was choosing the colourful fabrics for the 'flowers'. I decided on a Mint Julep FQ bundle from the Fat Quarter Shop along with a orange print for a fun contrast.

For the half square triangles, I used a paper roll of 'Triangles on a Roll' which makes these so much easier to complete. No need for a tonne of trimming and worrying about fabric shifting when sewing on the bias. I love, love, love this product.

Once I decided on the layout and the placement of those orange blocks, sewing the quilt top together was simple. I basted and quilted in the ditch. I then thought it would be fun to add a little bit of hand quilting.

I used some circle templates to mark small and medium circles on the quilt (around where seams met). I then quilted some big stitches in different greens for some extra quilty texture.

The quilt was finished with a scrappy binding with the remaining pieces of prints from the quilt top. I love a scrappy binding, don't you?

And to keep up to date with my labelling (I was quite slack for a number of years), I hand embroidered a simple label and appliqued it to the back of my quilt.

Thank you to the Fat Quarter Shop for inviting me to participate in the Fat Quarter Flower Blog Hop. It's always such fun working with the lovely people at FQS.

  1. Thanks for sharing....love the green with the orange contrast. I really like the
idea of a little hand quilting in the quilt. I have not yet tried the hst paper, but it is
on my table to do. I think you just gave me the push I needed !

You will love the HST paper - it makes the triangles so much more precise.

  3. I also love the secondary pattern of white stars you get if you shift your vision a bit. Lovely quilt, and the pings of orange add loads of interest.
