Orange Peels + GIVEAWAY

Orange Peels (AKA Ace of Diamonds, Melon Patch and Joseph’s Coat… just to name a few) are one of those traditional blocks which quilters just love. This block has been around since the 1800’s and is popular with sewists because they could (and still can) use the smallest scraps of fabric to create beautiful work.

If you’re a regular reader of my blog, you’ll know how I love sewing with scrap fabrics. The overall look of a scrappy project just makes me feel so happy.

I received an Impressions Orange Peel Quilting Template Set from my lovely friends over at The Fat Quarter Shop and have enjoyed incorporating the orange peels into my work of late. The shape is just so versatile!

I’ve used the templates as hand quilting guides. I’ve traced the templates onto my project and used the lines as quilting guides with lovely thick Perle 8 cotton to create textural effect.

I’ve used the orange peels as leaves in more contemporary quilting projects. Unfortunately I can’t show you the projects fully just yet, as they’re due for publication later in the year. I’ll keep you posted.

To take the scrap fabric usage to a further extreme, I’ve made scrappy orange peels with strips of fabric.

To make my scrappy orange peels, I sew strips of fabric together to make a larger piece. I then use a template to trace the orange peel on medium weight sew-on interfacing. Place the interfacing on the top of the strip piece and sew directly on the drawn line with a small stitch. I then out out approximately 1/4” outside of the line, make a little cut in the centre of the interfacing and turn out the peel (or leaf) shape.

Use a tool to push out the points until they’re lovely and sharp, press the whole thing and then applique with teeny tiny stitches. One day I’ll finish this project, but I fear it’s going to be one of those loooooooong ones that take years to get done.

Do you love an Orange Peel quilt project?
