Wonky + Scrappy Quilted Placemat {Tutorial}

Bust a few of those favourite fabric scraps which you’ve been saving, by making my super scrappy, slightly wonky, quilted placemat pattern.

Scrappy Quilted Placemats

I originally created this pattern for the All Free Sewing website. It was features on their blog, Seams and Scissors during National Sewing Month - September 2015.

You can view the full tutorial on the Seams and Scissors blog HERE, (which incidentally was one of their most popular projects of the month – YAY!!!) or you can view and download the FREE printable pattern HERE in my Craftsy store.

If you go ahead and create one of my Wonky + Scrappy Placemats (or even my previous placemat project, All in a Row which you can find HERE), here are some extra suggestions/tips”

1. If your machine has one, use a walking foot. You’ll be sewing through a lot of layers and the walking foot will assist you in sewing neat, straight lines.

2. Use two layers of batting. As the placemat will most usually be the setting for hot plates of food, that extra layer of batting will give your table extra protection… plus it makes all of that straight line quilting look more effective with the extra loft.

3. Use a 3.5 stitch length on your sewing machine. It’s a lot of quilting, and the longer stitch length not only looks better, but makes the process a little faster.

4. Good quality thread is your friend. I use Aurifil 40wt cotton thread when quilting. It’s slightly thicker than the piecing thread, and is not only stronger, but looks great.

Scrappy Placemat - Close UP

I created my placemat with Extravaganza by Lila Tueller for Riley Blake Fabrics and the outer border in a coordinating solid turquoise from Spotlight. The binding is also scrappy. I always cut my binding strips to 1.75” and keep any extra or leftover pieces in a basket. If I ever need to create a binding, I know that all of my strips will be the same width and I can just sew them all together perfectly.

As always, if you create if you liked my pattern and use it to create your own Wonky + Scrappy Quilted Placemats, I would love to see your creations. Please email a picture to sameliasmum@gmail.com or tag me on social media with my handle @SameliasMum or hashtag #SameliasMum.

  1. So cute! I save extra binding too - makes it so easy to finish small projects, doesn't it?
