Irish Harvest Quilt by Anorina Morris |
It seems like ages since I've been able to share any of the work I did earlier in the year. It looks like I've not sewn much at all lately, but I have. Secret sewing ;-)
Express Publications (publisher of Australian Patchwork & Quilting / Handmade magazines) asked if I'd be interested in working with some Tilda fabric for them. I took maybe 0.3 seconds before replying to their email with a "yes, yes, YES!"
I have such a soft spot for Tilda fabrics. The prints and the colours make me smile and the fabric itself is just lovely to work with.
For the longest time, I wanted to make an "Irish Chain" quilt. It's a rather traditional quilt design and I always find these quilts eye-catching. I tweaked the centre of the block to have a large white space rather than small squares - I think this would be just perfect for some hand quilting or embroidery.
I decided on a dark blue (a sort of denim colour) solid fabric to be the central focal fabric for the chain. I think choosing this solid colour was one of the most difficult decisions as I wanted it to be striking, but also work with the Tilda Harvest colours.
It's a simple design, but I have to admit that all of those little squares take time to piece. I popped on some of my favourite pod-casts just sew, sew, sewed.
I used a very light polyester batting in this quilt. It's lovely, soft and with these still-cool evenings, perfect for my lap in this current season.
Australian Patchwork & Quilting Magazine (Volume 27 No 9) is on sale now at your local newsagent.
I'm contemplating using this design to make a Christmas quilt or project. Have you started your Christmas sewing yet?
Love it! An Irish Chain quilt is on my bucket list. Hope it turns out as lovely as yours. :-)
