Fat Quarters {Review}

If you’re a quilter, you will undoubtedly have a number of Fat Quarters in your stash. I have a lot of fat quarters and cannot resist buying more when I come across new pretty ones.

Fat Quarters by Lark Crafts is a fabulous book which includes 50 Fat Quarter projects. Scanning through the list of contributors, some familiar names stand out: Amy Friend, Maureen Cracknell, Mollie Johanson, Megan Hunt, Abby Glassenberg and Malka Dubrawsky… just to name a few.

Fat Quarters

Fat Quarters begins with the basics. How to cut a fat quarter, how many different sized squares a FQ yields and the usual sewing basics. Fat Quarters has excellent instructions and diagrams. The book is then divided up into these main sections:

Babies & Kids
Bags
Quilts & Pillows
Home Decor
Wearables
Give & Use

Each project advises the sewist how many fat quarters they will need. For example, if they only have 2 ‘special’ fat quarters to play with, they can flick through and find perfect projects to create with these 2 pieces.

The projects are quite diverse and include all sorts of skills ranging from basic piecing to applique, EPP and embroidery. The patterns are well written and easy to follow, which makes this a great book for any sewing skill level.

Personally, I think this book would make a great gift for a beginner as the projects are quite contemporary and are fun to create for themselves or to gift.

One of my favourites is this one called All My Heart Mini Quilt (pattern by Julie Zaichuk-Ryan).

I decided to make my own little version with some teeny Liberty fabrics and denim to create this fun mug rug.

Fat Quarters is certainly a good one to add to your craft book library. With so many projects to choose from, there is always something in this book which will tickle your imagination.

Fat Quarters is published by Lark Books and available in Australia from Can Do Books or internationally from Amazon.
