Microwave Popcorn {Recipe}

Is there anything better than sitting down to a family movie with a bowl of freshly popped corn?

We used to buy pre-packaged microwave popcorn, but it can get expensive, plus the smell of the fake butter was overwhelming and would linger in the kitchen for ages.

These days, I buy popping corn kernels and still prepare it in the microwave, but without all of the added oil, salt or artificial additives.

To make a bowl of Cheap, Easy and Healthy Microwave Popped Corn:

1 brown paper bag
1 handful of popping corn
1 Microwave

Optional:
* Spray Oil
* Salt or Sugar

Place a handful of popping corn kernels into the brown paper bag. I don’t actually measure properly, but I’m guessing it’s around 3 tablespoons-ish.

Adding too much corn will overfill the bag once it’s popped and corn will start to ooze out all over the place (trust me, I’ve been there).

Fold the top of the bag over around 1cm and press the crease down firmly – I use a fingernail. Then fold the bag over another 1 cm and press the crease firmly.

Place the bag in the microwave. I like to shake it so that the corn is sort of flat and in a single layer (if that makes sense).

Set the microwave to 2 minutes and 20 seconds and start. The length of time will depend on your microwave and the amount of corn you have to pop. Just listen to the popping.

It will pop in a big flurry and then start to slow down. When it slows down to about 2 seconds between the last few pops, it’s ready.

Sprinkle on some salt or sugar. My kids like a little bit of chicken salt on the popcorn.

Popped corn is also a fantastic lunch box treat or perfect after school snack in between activities.

Store in a zip-lock bag once it’s cool.

I’ve been finding some yummy popcorn variations on Pinterest and am looking forward to making some Autumnal flavoured popcorn with cinnamon and spices.

What is your favourite popcorn topping?

  2. Our favourite is just plain, out of the microwave. This is our preferred way to make popcorn but a bit of icing sugar is always nice and so is the mixture you use for honey crackles - this makes great popcorn crackles.
    Finally if you can find it, for a savoury taste try to find Herbamare - a vegetable and herb salt. Really tasty!!
