Crochet: An end and a beginning

Like most crafters, when I take on a new craft, I tend to jump in, head first... and buy a lot of stuff for 'future' projects.

I jumped into crochet a number of years ago, and have sooooooo much yarn at home that it's time I used it up before buying any more. I honestly don't need any more crochet blankets in my house as I tend to make at least one new one, every year.

Having joined Illawarra Quilters, I found out that they not only take community quilts (donationed quilts to distribute within the area to those in need), they also take crochet & knitted items. This was just the push I needed and finished this crochet rug in about a week. It's made with quite chunky yarn (possibly 10 or 12 weight).

It's finished up a great size - not too big and not too small. It covers my legs comfortably when I'm sitting on the lounge so it'll be great as an adult knee rug or for a baby or toddler.

I have a bag with lots of little bits of yarn. I always tend to make granny squares with them, but I looked up ideas on YouTube and found a Moss Stitch (or Linen stitch) blanket which is super easy and uses up lots of bits.

The foundation is an even number of chain stitches - I just counted mine in lots of 10. Then go into the 4th chain and single crochet and a chain, skip one and go into the next chain stitch with a single crochet and a chain, skip one and into the next chain stitch..... and repeat..... and repeat..... and repeat....

This blanket scrappy mossy blanket is now my evening project. It's easy to do in front of the telly and I get to use up lots of bits in random colours. How fun is that? This will be another blanket which I will donate to charity once it's finished.
