Pickledish Quilt {Progress}

It's been a little while since I've checked in here. Life has been hectic and on top of that, I got covid so spent over a week feeling quite low and without oomph. I think I'd pretty much back to normal now and can go up the stairs without being all huffy and puffy.

I've spent the last couple of week working on a new quilt - a PickleDish quilt. This type of quilt has been on my bucket-list for years but it always seemed too hard and I never started.

I watched some classes on Creativebug (still using up my free 60 day pass). My link is below so you can get a free 60 day pass too.

I saw a couple of classes which really captured my attention. Sarah Bond was making her pickledish quilts and sharing a variety of blocks to incorporate into a quilt. Then I watched Tara Faughnan make a double wedding ring quilt and loved that idea and thought I might like to make one of those. I then watched Tara make a triangle quilt with the foundation paper piecing method, but using freezer paper and folding as you go, rather than sewing into the paper (and then having to remove the papers at the end). I was sold on that idea and jumped right in.

I decided to mix up a couple of the class learnings and making my own version of the PickleDish quilt incorporating parts from both instructors. I have a couple of rolls of freezer paper which my wonderful husband brought back from the US for me. I didn't even need to leave the house to start on this project. Perfect! I traced out four of the wedge arcs to freezer paper and have been using those same four arcs for all of the 36 blocks I've made so far.

I've had such a fun time going through my fabric stash and pulling out a variety of solid colours (and some prints splashed around here and there).

I tended towards brighter and lighter colours to start with...

... and then started some darker brown and purple and magenta which I loved even more.

I'm now at 36 blocks, but would really love to make this into a quilt that would suit my king size bed, so I guess I'll just keep making more blocks - as time permits. I have a big pile of 3.5" x 5" pieces sitting beside my sewing machine which are what I use for the wedges - this will make a good starter/ender process while I work on other things.

Hah! Who am I kidding? I'll not be able to stop at only working on this sporadically.

  3. I love all the bright colors you are using. I didn't realize you didn't have freezer paper there - glad your husband had been able to buy some here - they sell it in all the grocery stores for sure - big rolls of it. And the only thing I have ever used it for is sewing - not food.

  9. First of all, I'm so very sorry you got COVID! After all this time, I'm surprised you didn't get it sooner. Picked it up at the quilt shop, perhaps? Hopefully your case wasn't too bad, and you didn't lose your sense of taste. That's the worst! Second, I love, love, love the blocks you're making! So colorful. Depending on the size of your pieces, I think I could make it from my bins of solid scraps. I have never done freezer paper foundation piecing, but I've always wanted to try it. Maybe I need to check into that free 60 days of Creativebug. Thank you for the link to that. I love your blog posts, Anorina. You always inspire me.
