Get on Board with Sewing {Blog Hop} PLUS a giveaway

September is (Inter)National Sewing Month. To celebrate this fun month for sewers, I'm participating in the "Get on Board with Sewing" blog hop, hosted by Melva Loves Scraps. Also, there's a fantastic giveaway - keep reading to find out how to enter.

Our brief was simple - sew something that ties into the theme and then write about it:

Your “something” could have a tropical or surf feel.  It can be clothing, a quilt, a bag, a toy, or whatever you choose! It might include some tropical themed fabric or novelty print… or not.

I love Hawaii. We've visited a number of times as it's an easy flight over from the east coast of Australia. The weather is fabulous, beaches beautiful, people are friendly and welcoming and we generally just love the laid back vibe of the islands.

I always buy fabric when I go to Hawaii. I found some very cute novelty fabric last time I was there, at Walmart of all places. I especially love the malasada print and have made it the focal point of my pouch. Leonard's Bakery is iconic in Hawaii and make the most delicious malasadas (Portuguese style filled donuts). If you search #Leonards on Instagram you'll see the yumminess.

Anyways, I decided to make a little pencil case for my blog hop project. I love to watch Svetlana of @sotakhandmade sew up her bags and pouches so used one of her free projects on YouTube and made the slim pencil case using her tutorial.

It came together quite quickly and I'm so pleased with how it's turned out. It's a great size to keep inside of my handbag to store the little "bits" that seem to end up at the bottom of the bag (ie spare change, my mask, lip balm etc).

Here are my fellow blog hoppers. Please go and see what they've created to celebrate (Inter)National Sewing Month.

  5. Hi Anorina, my first time to your lovely blog, and that is one of the fun things about a blog hop. My project is also related to Hawaii! How neat that you can fly there easily. I love your bag and have saved the tutorial. What is the little tape on the side - a name tag?

  8. what an adorable pouch. I love your fabric so fun.
I used to sew garments all the time. Than I found quilting and voila, the world opened up. I love to make quilts of all sizes, things for around the house, such as pillowcases, hot pads, table runners etc....

  11. Cute little pouch and adorable fabric. My one time in Hawaii I regret I didn't go to the Walmart. I found out afterward that they had really cute fabric in Walmart! Thanks for sharing!

  12. Cute little case and I love the fabric! I don't know why from my earliest years I've always shied away from zippers...but every time I put on in I'm like "Well that was easy!" LOL. I have a billion of them (an older seamstress gifted a box to me) so maybe this will be my squirrel today!

  14. When my family was young, I made their clothes. When the grandchildren came along, I sewed for them. Now I only make quilts.

  23. You find the best blog hops to participate in! I guess I don't follow any bloggers who organize hops. Nonetheless, I like your pencil case. I've made one with that pattern too, though I did a lot of hand-stitching first, and then turned it into a pencil case. I've been to Hawaii, but haven't heard of, nor experienced, Leonards Bakery. I've never heard of a malasada (nor seen such fabric)either, and I'm a pushover for baked goods! Glad you've been able to travel to Hawaii and make good memories.

  35. Pencil bags are a must around here, but to tell you the truth I never actually thought to make my own. My daughter and her friends who are all they call stationary supply snobs collect all sorts of pens, markers and pencils. These would make unique gifts! Thanks for the great idea!
