Coins Coaster

The Coins Coaster is a little project which I'm sharing here today and I must say, I a lot of fun making it all the while, using up little scraps which could have easily been thrown out.

As I was cutting fabric pieces for my project in next week's "Guy Thing" blog hop, the little edge pieces of fabric were being leftover after I cut out triangles. I decided to use a small 1" circle die to cut out perfect little circles from the scraps.

I wasn't sure what I would use these circles for, but knew that I was itching to finish the original project, so that I could play with my circles.

I used a scrap piece of Essex yarn dyed linen and drew up a 1" grid using a frixion pen. Yes, I know, a lot of people don't agree with frixion pens, but honestly, for something small like this coaster, which will likely get used daily and washed regularly, I think it's perfectly fine.

I then dabbed a little bit of glue (using a school glue stick) to arrange and hold down the circles. A little bit of repurposed batting on the back and I went to the machine and quilted straight lines through the middles.

I started with vertical and horizontal lines but figured I'd keep going and add the cross quilting lines. These circles will fray a little with use, but hopefully the extra quilting lines will prevent too much fraying.

I finished it off by sewing a backing, turning it out and top stitching around the edge. I really like this Coins Coaster and with a basket full of little circles, I'll probably make some more.

  1. Great idea. Love your coins coaster. Hugs, xx

  2. What a great use of leftovers. Loveit.

  3. It is amazing what can be done with scraps. Well done.

  4. A great scrap buster.

  5. Super idea. Raw edges give me heartburn, but used like this, they will be fine.

    1. Thanks Linda. Yes those raw edges will fray with use, but I figure these were destined for the bin anyways. Perhaps I'll try to machine applique around the circles next time. I have no shortage of cut out circles :)

  6. excellent idea for some jaunty expressive coasters❣️❣️

  7. thats pretty cute...

  8. Those circles are so cute! I'd be playing with them all day. Perfect little coaster and a great way to use up scraps. Thanks for sharing on Wednesday Wait Loss.

  9. Super cute use of some of your smallest scraps, Anorina!!
