Kawandi # 2 (progress)

I started a new kawandi style quilt project yesterday. I always love to have a variety of hand work projects on the go. Why concentrate on one, when you can work on 19 of them, right?

This piece will be a little bit larger that my first attempt and I'm digging into the floral scraps for it. I've got quite a few smallish pieces of japanese lawn which are so lovely and soft to stitch through. Quilting cotton is a little tougher to get the needle to slide through, especially in the places where the seams are folded over.

My stitches aren't perfect, just gosh those little quilty dimples make me happy.

I have other things I should be doing, but I keep thinking about it and just want to go back into the sewing room to play with this project. Ever had one of those projects that you just can't wait to play with?

  1. I haven't tried this but always liked the look of it. I was surprised that you start on the outside and add fabric as I would have guessed starting with a central piece and going outwards. As I have plenty of scraps this is something that I might try soon. Thank you for the inspiration. x

    1. I'm glad to be sharing the inspiration. Yes it seems an unusual way to work it - I wonder if you can start from the centre and work your way out.

  2. I am on my third Siddi (kawandi) style quilt. I found that number 7 bohn needdle work with pearl cotton, or three strands of regular embroidery thread, or number 12 wonderfil or aurifil threads.. i did not have these needles on my first try so used an applique needle and regular quilting thread on the outside edge....easier on the hands and joints. I am loving this Siddi process of making quilts. they are just fun.

    1. I think I need to get some bohin needles. I've read some great reviews about them. Thanks for the advice about the needles and thread :)
