Welcome to my stop on the "Show us Stripes!" blog hop. The challenge was to add stripes to our project. We could interpret this idea however we liked and some suggestions included using stripe fabric, stripe binding or strips of fabric to make stripes.
Over Christmas, I made a bunch of these Braid Table Runners and gifted them all to family & friends. Some were made with novelty Christmas fabrics and some were made with everyday fabrics.
FREE BRAID TABLE RUNNER PATTERN
I thought it was about time I made a braid runner for my long dining table. The table is 3m long and it's one of the first things we ordered/bought when we built this house. I wanted a woody rustic, farmhouse style table with white chairs (too much time on Pinterest, perhaps?). It fits the space perfectly and is great for when we have the whole family over for meals.
I have half a jelly roll left over from a previous project and really loved the colours, so figured it was perfect for my table as I'd get to see it all the time. Aqua, turquoise, mint and purple - YUM!
I put the runner together following my tutorial (which can be found here). Once you have the start and end of the runner cut up (which is really a big square cut into a HST and then 2 QST's) you can make the actual runner as long, or as short or even as wide as you like, to suit the space.
I made mine so it's only a couple of inches from the edge of the table. I was going to make it longer so that I had a bit of a cool over-hang, but then thought better of it as I have a cat who would probably see it as a fun challenge.
To quilt, I stitched in all of the ditches and then thought I needed a little bit of extra hand stitching, so creased some lines with my hera marker and did some big stitch hand quilting with perle 8 cotton in a light silver colour thread.
I finished it off with a stripe binding which is a favourite of mine and which fits into the "Show us Stripes!" guidelines for the blog hop :)
If you'd like to make your own Braid Table Runner, the free pattern is available here on my blog. It's not a downloadable pattern (which I've had lots of requests for and perhaps one day I'll get around to it), but it's very easy to follow. Once you make a start, it's just repetition until you have the length you need.
Thanks to Carla of Creatin' in the Sticks for hosting another great blog hop. It's always fun to think up ideas on the theme's that Carla comes up with. Be sure to visit these other bloggers to see what stripey projects they've created.
