Best of 2020

Well, hasn't it been quite the year?!? Rather than dwell on all of the bad stuff, I'm going to join Meadow Mist Designs in sharing my favourite five posts in the Best of 2020

Project 1 is my Hip to be Square pillow project. I used up some left over layer cake squares to make a nice big quilted pillow.

It was a fun project to make, it came together quickly and best of all, I was using up some leftovers which had been floating around in my sewing room.

This was also a pattern than many of you liked, recreated into pillows and quilts and shared on Instagram. So good!

Project 2 is my Birds in the Air Pillow. Using this bird block was a challenge within the Project Quilting 2020 event.

Birds in the Air Pillow

One thing which I liked most about this pillow was the extra hand-quilting I did to finish it. I'm a sucker for those hand stitched quilty bumps. This pillow now sits on the couch at my parents house :)

Project 3 is my Improv Curve Quilt. Generally, I'm not super comfortable sewing curves so this improv style project was a great way to "dip my toes" into curved piecing as the blocks didn't have to be super precise or matching.

I also loved the spiral quilting which I did in this quilt. I read the tutorial on how to do it over at Flourishing Palms (which is excellent) and then had a go myself. Such fun!

Project 4 is Twirling at the Disco Quilt. What a scrapbuster this baby was!!! Lot's of scrappy 2.5" squares got used up in the making of this quilt.

I still haven't quilted the top yet as I need to either piece a backing or find a great big king size flat sheet to use. I'll get there... eventually.

Project 5 are my Bigger and Better Quilted Placemats. It's the one project I made this year, that we use every single day.

Again, this was a scrap project using up all sorts of bit and pieces for the tops. I then backed these mats with old tea towels which also makes me happy.

They've been washed and dried multiple times and have held up very well.

Okay, that was really tricky choosing only 5 projects to reminisce over. I may need to sneak back later and post a second favourite 5 post ;-)

  3. I really like the placemats and could easily make some fabulous ones with my scraps but my husband is very classic and likes things to be just so, scrappy would drive him nuts. Twirling at the Disco is such a fun quilt. x

  4. When I first saw your improv quilt in February I wanted to give it a go, but mask making took over. It's on my bucket list for 2021 - thanks for the reminder :)

  14. Golly, but these are wonderful 2020 makes! I adore the pillows not only for the designs, but for the "bump" that hand stitching that gives them. So much lovely texture. Your improv curved piecing is great! And thanks for the shout-out for my spiral quilting tutorial. I'm so happy you found it helpful! Your use of scraps for the big quilt, and those charming place mats is perfect. I love seeing pretty scrappy projects like these. Everything is so nicely-done!
