Little Houses and Donuts

When I sit and chain piece (for example, my courthouse step blocks for my Midnight at the Oasis quilt), I like to have some background noise, especially when I'm at home alone. Chester (my cat) isn't the greatest conversationalist.

Sometimes I'll listen to the radio or a few chapters of audiobooks and sometimes I'll just turn to YouTube and watch (listen) to the latest videos on my subscription list and then let them autoplay.

One of my favourites is the Fat Quarter Shop channel.
There is always so much to watch, learn and inspire. I watched Corey Yoder (of Coriander Quilts) teach us how to make teeny tiny house pincushions which finish up at 2.5". Wouldn't you know it, I stopped sewing those courthouse step blocks and got to work on my own little scrappy house blocks.

I'm not sure what I'll make with them yet, but I do know that they're fun to stitch and I want to make more and more and more. Someone suggested making a quilt, but at 2.5" square, I think it'd take a really long time and require way more patience than I have.

In other sewing news, my daughter and I have been busy making felt donuts. My kids are part of team in the First Lego League (FLL) - in all honesty, I'm not exactly sure what it's about (I'd assumed they'd build lego robots, but there is so much more they have to do as part of the competition).

The kids meet up every Sunday for a couple of hours. After they compete against the local teams, they can compete in the state, then nationals and even internationally. My sister and nephew when to Houston earlier this year to compete at the 2019 International FLL competition.

On the day, teams swap badges or small items which represent their teams. As our team name has donuts in it, I've been told that we need to sew donuts to give away on the competition day. We have super bright pink felt (which matches their shirts) and I'm decorating the icing with big stitches using perle cotton or small beads (or sometimes, I use both perle cotton and beads).

The local competition is at the end of the month, so I'll come back and update with how they faired.

Have your kids/grandkids competed in FLL?

Want to join me in making some scrappy little houses? (Video link is above)

  4. Anorina, I love the houses. those tiny blocks would be so cute as a cushion, of course, the pincushion is so sweet. Also, these would make nice table toppers or all sorts of cute tiny creations.

    I love the donuts.
My daughters did play with Legos but they did not have competitions back in the 90s that I can remember. or in the early 2000s
Christina was a whiznerd and was always selected for Odyssey of the Mind competitions.
Lizzie was the serious pianist, and every year played in several group concerts with many pianos. Good memories.
Your kids are wonderful. These are days you will treasure
