Create to Infinity and Beyond #PQSeason8

I just looked back at my last post and realise it’s been a few weeks since I last checked in. Life has been very hectic with the Christmas & New Year period. Lot’s of food, socialising and the general daily routine out the door. It’s the middle of summer here, so we’ve been outdoors a lot… that is… when we haven’t been indoors enjoying the air conditioning.

I’ve been creating little bits and pieces, sewing here and there, and thought I’d jump back into sewing quite slowly… I saw the Project Quilting Challenge, hosted by Kim over at Persimmon Dreams on Instagram and decided to join in the fun. The first challenge is to make a project with the theme ‘eight is great’.

My first thought when I saw the challenge theme was the infinity symbol - courtesy of the TV show, Revenge. Have you seen it? Love it too? I absolutely adore the houses and decorating in Revenge. One day, when I own a beach house, I’ll decorate it just like the show.

Anyways, I digress… to me, the infinity symbol looks like a number 8 on it’s side. Perfect!

I chose a lovely Japanese Lawn for the symbol and the bias binding. It’s the loveliest, most delicate fabric to sew with, and appliqued it onto some Essex Linen in natural. I machine appliqued it by sewing around the edge twice with a brown cotton thread, trying to stay within the edge of the fabric.

I used some of my precious chocolate coloured Aurifloss to embroider the word “Create”. I echo-quilted around the symbol and then used some of the remaining floss to hand quilt around the binding. Speaking of binding, I chose to have rounded corners. I don’t normally make rounded corners (because it means the binding needs to be cut on the bias), but I honestly think that in this instance the curves add to the final “look” of the mini quilt.

This mini-quilt measures 8” x 13” and will hang on a wall in my sewing room.

A lovely reminder that creativity is truly infinite.

Leave a comment if you’d like my hand drawn pattern for this project. I’ll try to add it as a link here on this post (if there’s interest).

  1. I agree about making the edges curved. It makes the whole project cohesive with the curve of the 8. It's gorgeous. Well done!

  3. I saw this and wished I made it! At each of my daughter's swim meets, I draw a double infinity on her shoulder with an encouragement where you put the create. Now I really want to adapt your idea to make one for her. Love that your binding echoes the infinity and so much else about your project!
