Rainbow Crochet Granny Square Blanket

Crochet... my new addiction. I just finished my crochet granny square blanket and I'm so pleased with myself.

Chester is very interested my blanket, and desperately wants to sniff, scratch, walk, sit or do whatever it is that cats want to do on blankets.

I learned how to crochet on the Easter weekend, thanks to YouTube. I'd wanted to learn for ages (years), but it always felt too hard. I couldn't get my head around it and admittedly, I only know the basics.

Now that I have the basics under my belt, I feel more confident in attempting some trickier blocks/projects... and purchasing decent yarn, rather than the cheapest acrylic I could find. My sister turned her nose up at my pile of yarn - she's a yarn snob!

Do you crochet? Where do you buy your yarn? Favourite type of yarn?

  1. Yes I do crochet! LOL. I've been buying Stylecraft DK yarn and love it! I get it online from Wool Warehouse. It's super soft and wonderful to work with.

    1. Thank you! I must have a look at wool warehouse. The great thing is that postage to Australia isn't too expensive.

  3. What is it about cats and ANY project you might be working on? They are so funny ... and I love them. I wonder what Chester finally did....

Yes, I crochet. Many years ago I made these granny square afghans as gifts for my family and friends. I used black as the outside border. Like you, I used 3 different colors for each square and alternated the colors to get 9 different squares. Then I replaced ONE color and got another 9 squares. In this way, I had NO duplicate squares. I stitched the squares together with black yarn and finished the afghan with a crochet border all around, again with black yarn. My afghans fit a double or queen-size bed (LOTS OF SQUARES). Now that I see yours, I'm anxious to make one using your color scheme .... perhaps lap-size this time! Thanks for sharing your lovely work!

    1. Thank you for your lovely comment. Wow, it does sound like a lot of squares. I was afraid to tackle anything too big, so this is perfect for my lap when watching telly. The next one might be bigger. Happy crocheting :)

  4. I like the merino wool yarn from knitpicks.com and patternworks.com. I don't care to work with acrylic. Acrylic lasts forever, but it pills like crazy and is not as soft as merino wool.

Good luck with your crocheting. You're off to a beautiful start.

    1. Thanks Cynthia. I agree, acrylic isn't the greatest, but in all honesty, I didn't think I'd actually finish this which was why I bought cheap. Definitely going with merino (or something nicer) next time. I'll check those websites too :)
