BIG Shopping

I love shopping for groceries. I’m weird like that. I love going through the catalogues each week and planning where I will buy products. I hate paying full price for anything, so I look out for items when they’re on sale. Luckily for me, our local area has a Woolworths, Coles and Ald so I can shop around to get the best prices.

Today was a little different. We packed the BIG HUGE Industrial sized esky in to the boot of the car, filled it with those blue frozen bricks and headed up to Costco.

Costco is about an hour away and I don’t visit too often, but when I do, I like to make it worth my while.

Yes, those are two x 1 kilogram tubs of Nutella for around $12. This will (hopefully) keep the kids going for a while. The mayonnaise was around $7 for this huge 1.7kg jar. We haven’t tried this brand before, but I foresee a lot of potato salad in our future.

These dishwasher tablets are a great price too. They’re not the fabulous quality of the Finish brand of dishwasher tablets, but if I’m not washing super dirty or greasy plates, these work great.

When we go to Costco, we always pick up something new. Something unusual. Something which we don’t normally eat. Last time I was up there, I brought home Chipotle Aioli. Today, our unusual item was coconut flour.

Have you baked with it before? I hear it’s a thirsty flour and requires more liquid than regular wheat flour.

I saw a recipe in the last issue of Woolworths Fresh magazine for a Coconut and Raspberry Loaf which I am going to try tomorrow with this flour. I’ll let you know how I go.

Costco is fun. Personally, I don’t see it being an everyday type of grocery store, but for bulk items which don’t have expiry dates and can be stored – things like toilet paper or washing powder  etc - it’s great.

Have you been to Costco?

What are your favourite items to purchase in bulk?

  1. My hubby is now Gluten free so I tried the coconut flour. I also bought the coconut sugar from there . He did not like it at all. Very, very dry. I am trying to modify my recipes to get over this. We love Costco. We buy the Maple syrup and also buy the Swiss Miss milk sachets. My boys love this as a hot/ cold drink. I understand taking the big esky. We also love trying everything they have as samples.

  3. Oh how I wish there was a Costco in Perth! I share the same sentiment - it would be great to buy items that don't expire in bulk. I can't believe the size of the Nutella! And what a fantastic price!! I haven't tried coconut flour - we're not huge coconut fans here.
