The Humble Sprout {+ Recipe}

Brussels Sprouts. Love them or hate them, you are sure to have an opinion about them. A strong opinion. Is there another vegetable which provokes as much emotion as this miniature cabbage?

Brussels sprouts as we now know them were grown possibly as early as the 13th century in what is now Belgium. Brussels sprouts grow in temperature ranges of 7–24°C (45–75°F), with highest yields at 15–18°C (59–64°F). This means that right now, it’s peak Brussels sprout season in Australia. You can pick up at bag at Aldi for only $1.99.

Our family is split on the sprout issue. Two of us absolutely love them and the other two absolutely hate them. I even topped them with bacon, but FlyBoy didn’t waiver. His dislike seems immense and I just don’t understand it.

Anne from Domesblissity gave me a recipe suggestion and as I had the ingredients at home, I ran with it. Here’s is a yummy way to eat sprouts… and if you don’t like them, well that’s fine. It just means more sprouts for the rest of us. Thanks Anne x

Bacon Topped Sprouts Recipe 1

Bacon Topped Sprouts

500g brussel sprouts (trimmed)

A handful of diced DON bacon – a rasher of bacon will be enough

125g packet of pine nuts

1 tbsp butter

1. Steam the Brussels sprouts.

2. While the sprouts are steaming, in a medium pan, melt the butter and toss in the pine nuts to toast. Add the diced up bacon and keep mixing it until the pine nuts are golden and the bacon crispy.

3. Once the sprouts are ‘just’ cooked (you don’t want them over done and floppy), toss them into the pan with the bacon. Distribute them among the people who’ll eat them and be sure to tell the others that they’re missing out on a treat.

Honestly, yum!

So tell me, Brussels Sprouts - do you love them or loathe them?

  1. I love them!! The trick is never ever over cook.

  2. Love them! They're also very good with melted cheese on top.

  3. I love them too, but I'm the only one in my household.

  4. I am told that sprots are nice with nutmeg. Haven't tried it yet.

  5. I love them plain, with bacon or white sauc these look yumm

  6. That sounds yummy. I always cook mine in the microwave and they come out beautifully but anything is improved with the addition of bacon!

  7. Maybe I can sneak some fresh beans in here to get a nice use for them too,You see I helped the family when a kid to pick a few on about an acre and it sort of spoilt my yen for beans! Sprouts beans and bacon! I am going to have to give it a go!
