Mini Design Board

When constructing blocks, there are times when they need pressing before assembly.

If you're like me, taking all of the bits between the sewing machine to the pressing table and back to the machine, often results in the block bits getting mixed up.

There is a great tutorial on Lori Holts blog on how to make little design boards with foam board and hot glue.

Only thing is that I don't have easy access to foam board and I don't have a hot glue gun. I know - can't believe it either! Might be one to add to my Christmas list.

So I improvised. Aldi have a sale on artist stretched canvases in all different sizes. I bought a 2-pack and have made my version of a design board.

I've used left over pieces of batting and folded them around the board. As the canvas is stretched and attached to a wooden frame, I've attached the batting with my trusty staple gun.

Staple all the way around the frame, ensuring the batting is taught.

About 3 minutes work for a lovely new and very useful addition to my sewing room.

Do you use a mini design board?

  1. I have one that was made using the empty cardboard fabric bolt. It is so handy when you just want to quickly iron something small and don't want to get the big ironing board out.

  2. What a great idea...thanks for sharing. Most $2 shops sell those canvas boards up to large sizes, after putting the batting on as you did, just putting a pin through blocks should hold them if glue is not available.

  3. You are a clever little crafter...thanks for the idea... :)

  4. They are great aren't they... yes I have one too.... fluro green felt!!!

  5. Yep, and I love them. I used Lori Holt's instructions and inspiration and made a set of 5 small ones (about 8 inches square for 6 inch block components) and three bigger ones for 12-inch blocks. But I found attaching the binding-like borders to be kind of fiddly, so I think the next time I make some I'll use your idea, or some adaptation of it. Thanks for sharing.

  6. Awesome idea. I wanted a design wall/area but they take up so much room. This would be perfect for me! Love it.

  7. What a fantastic idea!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
