Madame Tussauds Sydney

It’s school holidays here in Australia, so finding things to keep the kids mildly entertained (and their brains working) is something which parents struggle with. There are only so many times we can go to the beach or the shopping centre or the movies…

Last week, we had a family day and had an outing in Sydney. We live about an hour and a half, south of the city, so whenever we head to Sydney, we need to pack supplies. Drinks, munchies, iPods, colouring books and pencils etc… and that is just for the car journey!

We parked at Darling Harbour and made our way over to the attractions. We were going to the Sydney Aquarium and Madame Tussauds. The one we visited first would depend on the queues to get inside.

Madam Tussauds was the winner. For a fraction of a second, I wondered whether the children would be bored, but the 300+ people waiting in the queue for the aquarium made that thought quickly evaporate from my mind.

I needn’t have worried. From the moment we walked through the doors, we were Awed. Amazed. Transfixed. Wowed. All those words, which mean that we were impressed.

From the MadamTussauds website:

Millions and millions of people have flocked through the doors of Madame Tussauds since they first opened over 250 years ago and it remains just as popular as it ever was. There are many reasons for this enduring success, but at the heart of it all is good, old-fashioned curiosity. Today’s visitors are sent on a unique, emotionally-charged journey through the realms of the powerful and famous. The museum-style ropes and poles have gone so guests can truly get up, close and personal with A-list celebrities, sporting legends, political heavyweights and historical icons, reliving the times, events and moments that made the world talk about them….

The detail in the wax statues is AMAZING! There were a couple which were so completely life like, that I expected them to just say “boo” when people got too close.

So here are a few happy snaps from our day at this famous exhibition:
I think my favourite was Audrey Hepburn… sitting at a table having breakfast (at Tiffany’s).

For obvious reasons, the biggest crowd was at the Justin Bieber statue. Dozens of young girls all waiting their turn to take a picture beside their idol.

The kids go to a Catholic school, so were excited to take a picture with Sister Mary McKillop (the first canonised Saint of Australia).

Aussie Musicians… and me with Jimmy Barnes.

Ned Kelly. A bush ranger. An outlaw. His eyes were so eerily life-like.

If you’re in Sydney and haven’t yet been to Madame Tussauds, I really recommend it. It’s a fun way to spend a few hours. All of the exhibits have props, so you can take photos and really get into the spirit of it.

If you could have anyone in the world made into a wax statue, that you could take home, who would you have?

I think I’d like a life size George Clooney at my house - holding a tray. I’d like somewhere to store my Nespresso pods.

  1. Ohh that is a hard one. I think Colin Firth but he would have to live in a cupboard at night as I am too easily startled and I would think there was someone in our house. lol

  2. Do we have to choose only one??? Could I please have 16 to hold all the Nespresso flavours???! I'd start off with Russell Crowe, Hugh Jackman, Johnny Ruffo, James Blundell and Ben Cousins,I know he's been a bad boy but if he's only a wax figure he couldn't get up to any mischief ;).
