Incy Wincy Spider…

A local woman, driving along, minding her own business, has crashed into a power pole, bringing down power lines all around her and is then trapped in her car waiting for the electricity company to come along and turn off the power before she can get out of her car…. all because of a spider.

Apparently a spider crawled along the windscreen of her car, which freaked her out so much that she lost control and crashed the car.

I’m not a fan of these creepy little fellows, but I’d like to think that I’d be controlled enough, not to lose control.

I’m more a fan of pulling over to the side of the road, jumping out of the car and then having a quiet little freak-out. A friend of mine carries a can of bug spray in the car with her, just for these occasions.

I was going to use an image of a real spider, but couldn’t bring myself to do it. After googling spider images, I’ve given myself a case of the Heebie-jeebies – Eeck!

Why are we so afraid of spiders? I know that a lot of them are deadly, especially here in Australia, but then again, so are snakes and sharks and crocodiles, but we don’t get as freaked out by them, do we?

Over to you – what freaks you out?

  1. Spiders don't bother me, but I'm terrified of coming across a rattlesnake! Of course, here in south Texas, we have rattlesnakes all around us and I've known some people who have been bitten, but I've never seen one. My son was bitten by a copperhead, which is also venomous, when he was 4, but they are not as aggressive as a rattlesnake!

  2. Living on a farm I'm a near neighbour to quite a few poisonous creatures - snakes, spiders, platypus, plovers - but I'm more likely to be chased and damaged by a cow in our paddock that has a very young calf. Common sense prevails and if you irritate/frighten a creature it's going to protect itself so the best bet is to give them a wide berth whenever possible as, more often than not, they are more afraid of you than you of them.
Only 'freak out' creature around here is tiger snakes as they are about the only snake that will chase you for no apparent reason and they are highly poisonous. I've had a big red belly black snake in the kitchen with me and it was more surprised than I was and couldn't find an escape route quick enough! I also had a resident huntsman in my car till it died of old age after about 3 years. Freaked the passengers a bit though :).
    Cheers,

  5. What freaks me out? Food stuck to plates etc that have supposedly been washed. Dinner plates lying around the next day. Unclean kitchens, generally!

  6. It would depend on the size of the spider and the direction it was traveling.... if moving my direction and it was a big, fuzzy one - I'd simply lose it - they scare me to death. I'd rather mess with a rattlesnake than a spider.

  7. Spiders freak me out. Bleahhhh!! Our entryway has been inundated with daddy long legs spiders (or as my daughter used to call them, long-legged daddies) most of the summer, and it drives me crazy. I get out the vacuum hose, and a long extension wand and happily suck them up. :D

  8. Spiders and snakes. Just the name freaks me out.Imagine me, 9 mths pregnant finding a red-belly black on my laundry step. I think I would have won a gold medal for high jumps when I jumped to avoid it.We were living in a property that backed onto a reserve at the time.:)

  9. I have had the huntsman fall off the sun visor on to the steering column as I was driving. I am incredibly frightened of spiders, but on that occasion I was more frightened of crashing, so was able to pull to the side of the road and get out. But of course that is not the end of it because the spider was still in the car and it was only me. So I had to coax it out with some card and then flick it away. I think it was hours before my heart settled back to normal!

  10. Spiders....unequivably (Spell check!) win it for me...no ifs, no buts, lol I have a funny story to share...I used to pick a friend up on the way to work, and one morning I've picked him up, and as I drove around the corner of his street to head towards work, the sun was in my eyes, so I put my visor down.....and there IT was, doing push ups, getting ready to pounce on me....all 8 of it's legs strengthening with each bounce.

So I'm driving, telling my friend "I'm going to have to stop the car Bill" "Uh huh" says he. "NO Bill, I'm really going to have to stop the car" "UH HUH" he repeats.

By this point the car is only creeping along at snails pace "BILL I gotta stop the car" "Well stop the 'expletive' car then"

I calmly indicate my intentions to pull over, a little more irratically swerve towards the curb, chuck the car in neutral, open my door, now screaming, and almost fell out the car.....did you notice what I'd forgotten to do??? YEP un-do my seat belt, so there I am, half in and half out the car, dangling like a spider from a web out my car door.

Bill very chivalrously un-did my seat belt for me so I could finish clambouring out the car....where I stood shaking and pointing to about an 1" spider on the visor....Bill opened the glove box, gets the street directory out, calmly leant over, got the spider on it, opened his car door and gently swept it off the book onto the nature strip.

Closes his door, puts the street directory back in the glove box and leaning towards my open door and says to me "Can we go now please?"

I can't believe I forgot to un-do my seat belt...thank heavens I've never appeared on Funniest home videos by some hidden camera fiend!

Hopefully I've put a smile on your face.

    Hugs

  11. Two more things...I saw a documentary once that said daddy long legs are a sign that you don't have redbacks as they go into a feeding frenzy over the black and red relatives!

The other thing is, don't you hate it when you're driving at night, and you see a huntsman run across the windscreen and whilst it creeps you out majorly, you are comforted with the fact that it's on the outside of the window...until you pull up in a better lit area and you find that it's on the inside and probably laughing at you!

  12. Speaking of huntsmans, did you know that the reason we really don't like these is because they are able to move faster than the human eye can track them. YUCK!!!!
I wish the myth about daddy long legs was true, we have red backs everywhere - although not inside where I see most of the daddy long legs. The DLL are the only ones that are allowed in my house, provided they stay clear of my room.

  13. No we don't get freaked out about snakes or crocs (don't have crocs here) but then ......we don't get them in our cars when we are driving either!!!!!!

  14. Embarrassingly enough, it is ducks that freak me out. I did get hit on the head by one that misjudged his take off trajectory but I was about 17 so that shouldn't account for it. However I did fall in the duck pond at The Queens Gardens in my then hometown of Nelson NZ when I was about 18 months old. Maybe it is related to that??? Geese aren't much better either, though fortunately I am not a total wimp & can handle chickens (especially roasted!). Tracee xx

  15. I don't like mice. :(

My dad wrecked his car once, when I was a kid. He was driving with his arm on the door, elbow out the window... and a spider jumped on his arm... the rest is history.

God bless and keep you safe from the spiders,
    Sonia

  16. I copied your spider to add to the bottom of my Halloween letters to my soldiers. I have three that I support. They are going to love him!
