Straight line quilting

I just have to say, I HATE STRAIGHT LINE QUILTING!
There, it's out in the open. Ahh... feel much better now.

I never seem to get a nice finish. Ever. Even with a tonne of pins.
I always end up with puckers where the stitching intersects. Drives me crazy!

Anyone have any advice on what I'm doing wrong?

Maybe I should just stick with my preferred free motion quilting (FMQ).

  1. I wonder if a different basting method would help. Look up Sharon Schamber hand basting on Youtube. I've heard that all the ladies in the local guild in my area use this method (I'm not a member). Might be worth a try...

  2. I am straight line quilting a quilt at the moment and found a fabulous method here http://tallgrassprairiestudio.blogspot.com/2009/11/straight-line-quiltinghints-and-tips.html

I was having major issues keeping straight lines and this tip is awesome. I also use a walking foot.

    Good luck!!

  3. I find that when I straight line quilt I need to frequently stop lift my foot up slightly and give a little tug on the fabric. This helps ease any fullness even when you use a walking foot I sometimes need to do this. It is very helpful when you are going to be crossing another quilted line. Hopefully this helps.

  4. Don't despair. Use a walking foot, increase your stitch length, check your tension and go. The secret is to start in the centre and move outwards. Also as Suzanne above said," ease the fullness out as you come to the intersection"
