It's the end of Term 3, spring school holidays here right now. No school for two weeks, which my kids have always looked forward to and which I love too. After 10/11 weeks of hard work, exams, activities etc, it's nice that they get these fortnight-long breaks a few times through the year.
At Hobbysew, they offer some work shop / classes, designed for kids. Some classes are for little ones (like plaster craft painting) and some are for the older ones (ages 10+). This week, I'm teaching a group of girls how to make pencil cases. It'll be nice that they can learn how to make a pencil case which they can take to school when Term 4 goes back. Plus, there's the hope that they enjoy it so much that they'll want to make more and more and catch that sewing bug that we all caught. Inspiring a new generation of sewers and quilters to find that handmade joy.
I've created a few samples of pencil cases - some small for just a few pens, a little larger to include more "stuff". I also made a quilted scrappy EPP pencil case - just for fun. I used left over pieces from Ellie Whittaker's new quilting cotton range and then straight-line quilted the panel with a variety of aurifil thread. Personally, I love all of the bright colour and how it turned out.

I have a different class planned for next week - hand stitched felt bookmarks - which will suit a younger group of kids who won't need a sewing machine. I'll work on those samples later in the week and share what I come up with.
Now I'm off to walk the dogs and then taking dad out to the bank/groceries etc. Hoping for some time in the sewing room later today. Fingers crossed!
PS Here's a little look at the behind the scenes photo shoot. Harry was determined to "help" take pictures.
They look fantastic, and very inspiring!!! Now I need to go away and make myself some pencil cases……
ReplyDeleteTHose are really cool! Enjoy your break with your kids!!
ReplyDeleteand what a great photo helper haha!!
A fun project that is sure to be a winner with that age group.
ReplyDeleteThey are so bright and colourful. What a great class.
ReplyDeleteI love each of these cases, and didn't realize you'd EPPed one of them. It's my favorite, with all those bright fabric prints, and different colors of thread. How great that you get to teach those girls! Not too many girls at once though, I hope. Indeed, you're offering them a project that could get them hooked, though zipper installation may put them off a bit. Fun to be crafting too, making bookmarks. I presume these classes are through the shop where you work. What a fun way to earn "pin money" - ahem... "fabric money." :-)
