Fruit Salad Puff Quilt Blog Hop (+ a giveaway)

Welcome to my stop on the Island Batik "All Puffed Up" blog hop. Having never made a puff or bubble style of quilt, this was a challenge which I was very much looking forward to.

This month, Island Batik ambassadors were challenged to use a new range of fabric - I was assigned Garden Delight which was designed by Kathy Engle. It's a very bright and saturated range of fabric which I absolutely love. Garden Delight is available in quilt stores this month, so keep an eye out for it.

The Garden Delight fabric range is available in these US stores:

Creekside Quilts OR
Hancocks of Paducah KY
Swifty Stitches CA

Having never made this type of quilt, my first step was to watch as many YouTube videos as I could find. There are quite a few methods of creating this traditional style of quilt, but I opted to go with the old-fashioned route of creating the individual puff casings and then putting them together.

For the back of each puff, I used the Island Batik grey solid fabric. My background squares were all cut at 4.5" and my quilt top squares were all cut at 5". These made generous sized puffs and a very squishy quilt overall. To stuff my puffs, I purchased a couple of inexpensive pillows from my local Kmart. The filling is made of fluffy polyester, which was absolutely perfect for this project.

Once my quilt was finished, I lay it down and not 30 seconds later, my dog Harry (the black one) lay on it and decided it was a nice place for a nap. I think it's a pretty good place for a nap too.

When cutting my 5" squares from the WOF, I had some small rectangles left over which measured approximately 3" x 5". I had a couple of each colour... this led me to creating a puffy topped cushion for the couch.

Once again, this was on the couch for approximately half a second, before my other dog (the red one) Charlie decided to come over and check it out for comfiness. Honestly, I thought I would be fighting the kids for the puffy quilt and cushion, but it's the dogs that claimed them first.

As always, Island Batik have taken me out of my comfort zone with the monthly challenge. These projects were a lot of fun to create and I can see that I'll be making more in my future.

I didn't use batting for this quilt as I thought it was warm enough with just the puffy top layer for our Aussie climate so it was only backed with the binding turned over to the front. For this, I used an Island Batik Foundation print called Sangria from the Precious Pinks range.

Piecing the puffs, I used Aurifil 50wt thread (colour 2600) and Schemtz Needles - Microtex Chrome (130/705 - 80/12).

Here are both Harry and Charlie on the quilt. Harry's tail is just a blurr in the background - that's because he was wagging it super-excitedly. He really liked the quilt.

And now for a giveaway. We all love a giveaway, right? Island Batik are giving away two new FQ bundles this week - Kings Castle and Juicy Mosaics.

  13. What a beautiful fabric collection. It is perfect for your puff quilts.
I don't really have a favourite scissor brand, but my favourite scissors are a pair of embroidery scissors that the lovely blogger Jannimary gifted to me many years ago, I use them for my cross stitch and stitchery projects.

  26. I'll admit that I've never been interested in making a puff quilt, but gosh, you sure made yours look good! Those colors are its redeeming feature, though I have no doubt that the "cush" that's felt from lying or sitting on them, is really nice. You did an excellent job interpreting the Island Batik challenge, and I'm sure Harry and Charlie would agree.
