See Ya Later - A Laptop Bag

Welcome to my stop on the "See Ya Later, Alligator" Blog Hop, hosted by Carla of Creatin in the Sticks.

The Challenge:

Create something to do with TRAVEL.
Anything from places to go, to how you get there, and anything in between.
Maybe even an alligator?
You decide!
The theme is really your own interpretation, surprise us!

I decided to make a quilted laptop bag for the challenge. When I go away on holiday, I usually like to bring my MacBook along on the trip. For blogging and those sorts of things, but also for when there's downtime and we want to watch a film or show on Netflix.

To make the bag, I used a fun cicada print - designed by Jocelyn Proust. I think I bought it during the sales last year from Spotlight. Could have been earlier this year (I've lost track of time).

I started by heavily quilting the fabric piece in straight lines, using my machine foot as the guide. I decided on Aurifil 50wt in a soft coral colour for the quilting which has blended in quite nicely and not detracted from the print.

Rather than argue with a zipper, I decided to just create a little flap with velcro to hold the laptop in place. The outer is the same cicada print and the underside is the same fabric as the bag lining.

I used cotton webbing tape in a neutral cream colour for the handles. I bought a big roll of this tape years ago and it seems to be never-ending.

Making this bag was quite simple and quick. The quilting took the longest, but once the panel was ready, I put the bag together in an evening.

Here are the bloggers hopping along with me today. Go check out what travel inspired projects everyone has made.

  2. Beautiful bag for traveling with your Mac! It sure beats the look of my no-personality black canvas bag! I much prefer the use of the velcro strips over a zipper...it really adds an extra special touch. Great job!

  8. Cool bag! I like the velcro closure and I like the blue squares at the ends of the handles and closure. Nice accents for such a handy bag! Thanks for sharing this, Anorina!

  9. This is a great idea. I recently made one for my Nook (without straps) to protect it in my Nap Sack or tote for travel. I have a tendency to throw things in my bags without thinking about what might be down at the bottom getting abused.

  10. What a fun fabric for your Mac. I am with you on zippers for them and velcro flaps make it so much easier to get into when your on the go.

  11. Who couldn't use this when traveling? It's perfect! Love your fabric and the quilting. I, too, would rather have velcro closure, especially when wrestling with a bag in the airplane. Thank you for the inspiration!

  12. I'm so glad you mentioned the cicada print. I thought the bag was perfectly done and noticed the dark blue print but not the cicadas on the other print. Oh, those cicadas can be so noisy! A great idea.

  16. Beautiful fabric and a great bag altogether!! Did you just use one big set of 3 layers (top & bottom fabric with batting in the middle) and then folded it or 2 sets of the 3 layers that you sewed together? I want to make one myself but think that maybe it would be better if I do it the 2nd way. What do you think?

  17. Darling bag! After last year's 17-year cicada cycle, if I never see or hear another one, I won't mind. LOL

  18. Beautiful bag! I love the cicada print and how you quilted the whole piece. I also like to carry my laptop with me when I travel, so I just may have to make this. Thank you for sharing.

  20. Your bag is a beautiful way to hold a laptop and the Velcro is a great closer for it. The cicadas are much cuter and quieter on your bag than they are on the trees around here! Thanks for sharing!

  29. Such a nice bag! It's very practical, and pretty at the same time. It was such a good idea to densely quilt the fabrics because I'm sure that makes it more sturdy. And those handles are perfect - nice and thick, so there's no chance of losing hold of that precious computer. You did a really nice job with this.
