Welcome to my stop on the Island Batik Ambassador "New York Beauty" challenge. We each received a beautiful bundle of new release fabrics (which are now shipping to stores) and were challenged to create a quilt using the New York beauty block as inspiration.
The fabric range which I received is called "Santorini" designed by Claudia Pfeil. It's a beautiful, saturated palette, all based on the colours and textures of the Greek island of Santorini.
Like quite a few of the other ambassadors, I'd never made a New York Beauty block (much less a quilt), so the nerves set in a little bit. The first thing I did was borrow books from the library, look at Pinterest and watch YouTube videos. When I was confident to start, I jumped right in. And guess what - I absolutely loved making my New York Beauty quilt.
I decided to keep it simple for my first time and chose to make a one block quilt. It's a great block for a beginner and honestly, lots of fun to make.
Once I'd made a few blocks, I layed them out and really liked how they looked on point, so that became my plan. Over the course of about a week, I made the 25 NYB blocks for my quilt. We also received a couple of yards of co-ordinates from Island Batik. I used Bridgewater to frame my quilt.
I'm very pleased with how Santorini Beauty turned out and I'm thankful that Island Batik gave us this "out of our comfort zone" challenge. And now, I can't wait to make another New York Beauty quilt.
Thanks to Island Batik for sending the beautiful fabrics to create this quilt, I'd also like to thank the additional industry partners who also supplied products.
Hobbs Batting - Heirloom 80/20 bleached cotton batting.
Schmetz Microtex Chrome 80/12 sewing machine needles (super sharp and perfect for batik sewing).
Aurifil thread - pieced with colour #6731 (tiramisu) in 50wt and quilted with #2887 (very dark olive) also in 50wt.
Now for some fun.. it's giveaway time!
I'm giving away a little bundle of fabrics from this Santorini Range. A charm pack with 24 x 5" squares and a couple of FQ's.
Santorini looks like a beautiful holiday destination, so to enter my giveaway, just leave me a comment telling me where your favourite holiday location is.
If commenting anonymously, please include your name/email address in the comment. A winner will be chosen on the weekend.
Island Batik are also hosting some very generous giveaways this month. This week, they've got a couple of new release FQ bundles up for grabs (including Santorini). Please enter in the rafflecopter.

I love Mexico.
ReplyDeleteoh WOW your quilt is gorgeous. I love all the colors/fabrics and the placement. I love the movement which really catches my eye. Thanks for sharing and for inspiring. I have this NY pattern and now want to give it a try. We pretty much stay close to home. Havent done a lot of long distance traveling since the kiddos have left home. We used to love to go into the mountains and camp out. My husband and son would take care of the cooking and our daughter and I would clean up. We went on a lot of hikes and saw a lot of animals that lived in the area. Such wonderful memories. quilting dash lady at comcast dot net

Love the simple approach, especially when you are trying something new. My dream vacation was one in Hawaii many years ago, but just going to the lake with family is at the top of the list.
ReplyDeleteSo many beautiful places to visit. My favorite place is Norway! I also have never made a New York Beauty quilt. It is on my list!
ReplyDeleteIt is hard to say how much fabric I purchase in a year as I never have tracked it. I am currently trying to work through my stash but of coarse there are times when you just have to buy some fabric!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful, Anorina! I think we've learned a lot with this challenge - at least I have!

ReplyDeleteHi,
ReplyDeleteWhat an awesome quilt! So pretty and colorful.
Have a great day!
My favorite holiday location would be in a cozy house, with family, having a good meal & a fun time. Your New York Beauty blocks remind me of fans that women would flutter in front of their faces to cool off. Usually seen in old movies. peturniakr@aol.com
ReplyDeleteTypically, I go to visit family. But when my partner and I go on vacation, we choose a city and explore it. We loved San Francisco, and Washington, DC, but our very favorite place was New York City, and I would return there in a heartbeat. We live in the country, and spent many, many years living by the ocean, so that may be why city vacations appeal to us, but we also just love immersing ourselves in the culture and vibrancy of different cities.
ReplyDeleteI love your quilt! The colors are beautiful and the design keeps my eyes moving around. It's interesting how sometimes the top spikes seem in the foreground and sometimes the bottom ones seem like they are. And the background color is absolutely perfect! Just like the sea by Santorini! My favorite place in the world is Thailand, although I spend most of my holidays on my front porch in Wisconsin, which is nice too. Thanks for sharing the story of this quilt, and thanks for sharing your beautiful fabric!
ReplyDeleteThe quilt is stunning! You have pieced it beautifully. The range is amazing that you put at the end. Yummy yummy. With regards to holidays I still have very fond memories of the UK and France but I think the UK has lots more for me to see. It is in my genes lol.
ReplyDeleteI do love this quilt, Anorina! Thanks so much for linking up with TGIFF this week! Have a wonderful week!
ReplyDeleteLove this quilt. I love to vacation in Florida. I want to vacation in Maine.
ReplyDeleteThis is a beautiful quilt. Best vacation is Sorento in Italy
ReplyDeleteI got married on Santorini! So it is definitely a favorite.
