Not Blue, Not Green

This months rainbow scrappy challenge is for aqua, teal, turquoise - not green and not blue scrap fabrics.

Luckily, I have a lot of scrap fabrics in this palette and was spoiled for choice when making my scrappy quarter log cabin blocks.

I ended up making 12 blocks but the month is still young, so plenty of time to add to this pile of teal and turquoise prettiness.

Like in previous months, I've also made up my scrappy hexagon flowers and they're ready to applique to my black/white backgrounds. I save those for the evening when we sit down to watch television.

Today, I also pulled out my Midnight at the Oasis quilt from a drawer. I added an extra border and then pieced the backing fabric. The quilt is now pin basted and ready to quilt.

At this stage, I'm planning to stitch in the ditch around all of the borders and then add some hand quilting with Aurifil 12 wt threads for fun and texture.

I also want to thank everyone who left me messages of support and checked in with me after the passing of my mum. It's been a very difficult week with emotions running high. On Monday, we had her funeral and laid her to rest. As we're in lockdown here right now, the funeral service was limited to 10 people which made it very difficult for her family and friends who couldn't attend.

Hopefully we can have some sort of memorial once life re-opens and re-starts. We've been locked down for 7.5 weeks now and with the number of daily cases still on the increase, I'm not sure this lockdown will finish at the end of the month as initially announced by our state premiere.

  1. that is a beautiful original looking quilt you share it is a beauty. So sorry to hear the news that your mother died - that is hard to get through and then to have it be limited on attendance also.

    1. Thanks Karen. It's been tough for our family and especially for dad who can't really move forward until this lockdown is lifted.
I do love this quilt by Jen Kingwell. There are places where my blocks didn't quite fit right, so I've added extra bits here and there, playing along with the scrappiness of it. It's all basted and ready to quilt now :)

    1. Thanks Alycia. Gosh you are right - it does hit at the oddest times. Mum was my go-to person and since I moved out of home over 20 years ago, we chatted every day. Whenever I made something, whether it be food, a cake, a new pillow or quilt, I'd take a picture to show her. Feeling a little bit lost right now, to be honest.

  12. Aqua and teal are such pretty colours. Funnily enough, I see quite a few fabrics there that I have or had in my stash. It will be good to start working on the next stage of Midnight at the Oasis.

  15. Firstly, condolences Anorina for the loss of your beautiful mum. It is a loss we never get over...we somehow learn to live with it. It is indeed a journey. May the memories you have of her help sustain you in coming days. Although your lockdown does not seem to be doing its job.... Love the turquoise/jade/aqua - that is the colour palette that dominates my stash. Your "Oasis" quilt certainly deserves to be finished and admired! Stay safe....x

  17. Really sorry to hear about your Mum, we have had one family funeral in April last year, at that time only 3 people were able to attend, she had 5 children, I know it was really difficult to decide who would be there and who would be relegated to zoom. I hope that every one present in which ever way felt a part of the day. Sending you crafty hugs from England
