Smitten Quilt

This past week, I've spent my evenings slowly stitching up the last few EPP blocks to finish of the Smitten Quilt. I'm pleased that only one week into March, I've finished the 3 last full blocks and 3 half blocks, which were my "One Monthly Goal" for March (OMG).

My next step is to sew these blocks onto the main quilt top and then figure out how I'm going to finish the sides of this quilt. There isn't an instruction for this on the pattern, which I must admit is a little disappointing.

I was thinking that once I remove the backing papers I could applique this to some borders on the sides? Or possibly creating some big triangle EPP pieces?

Have you made this quilt using English paper piecing? How did you finish it? Any suggestions would be gratefully accepted.

  1. Your quilt is so pretty! You could either EPP some partial blocks to insert in the spaces then sew binding onto the edges without borders. Or you could turn under the edges of your EPP work and applique onto borders. That is what I did when I finished the edges of my Grandmother's Flower Garden quilt.

  2. Your Smitten quilt is looking beautiful. So many gorgeous fabrics. I am fashioning a Sweet Sunday which is a pattern by the same lady (I think). The border for my Sweet Sunday are large EPP triangles. That could work for your quilt.

  5. I have successfully appliqued EPP onto blocks and borders. Firmly press with a dry iron when the papers are in and then again with starch or Best Press when you get the papers out. Then applique down with your favorite technique (I use ladder stitch). This is a beautiful quilt, love the colors.

  6. I finished my Smitten quilt several years ago and also was disappointed that the side triangles were not included with the epp package but they are large. I ended up drafting the triangle And making the paper pieces, it wasn’t hard. I can send you the measurements if I can find where I put them.

  7. Well done on the work towards your OMG! I love your Smitten quilt. I too would be disappointed about the sides - was the ariginal left like that? I did a hexagon quilt where I 'sliced' the sticking-out-edges so I could machine sew the borders on - I don't think it would work here but it worked fine for mine!

  8. Your quilt top is beautiful, well done on finishing the blocks. I would be tempted to applique it onto a background fabric, then you keep the interesting shape.

  10. This is quite pretty!! Is it okay to just finish it as is and have funky sides??

  11. Finish with bias binding, leaving the edge wave in and out like it currently is.

  12. Hi Anorina, I love how your 'Bring Me the Scraps' quilt floats. That's how I would finish 'Smitten'. The top and bottom should be like the sides. No partial EPP blocks, only whole blocks so the edge is the same all around the EPP area. Fill in the spaces along the edges with background color partial EPPs. Then add background color border.
You could use the 6 partial EPPs you remove and make a pillow sham!

  14. Such a lovely EPP quilt. You can just needleturn the edges to border strips as they are or make some fill in EPP shapes to even the edges first. Or you can just sandwich it with batting and backing fabric and cut around the edges leaving a quarter inch to fold and whipstitch to the front. Does that make sense? When in doubt You Tube , but there isn't a lot of info about this.
