Sardine Soirée Quilt

I have a narrow wall beside my refrigerator, where my Tulip Time quilt has been hanging for the past couple of years.

I decided that it was time for a change, so I made my Sardine Soirée wall quilt to replace it. I'm really quite pleased with how it turned out. It's super bright and colourful and each sardine has it's own personality.

I used all sorts of Tula Pink fabrics for the sardine bodies and coordinated their heads and tails with solid fabrics. I machine appliqued them to the background low volume dotty prints with black aurifil cotton thread. I think that the black gives them a good outline.

Each fish has been embellished with ric-rac, buttons, sequins, beads, lace and one fish even has eye-lashes! I was going to add more "bling" but the fabrics are so great that I decided to show (just a little bit of) restraint.

I love this long skinny quilt and even made a label for it straight away. I've decided that I'd better start labelling my quilts as soon as I finish them, otherwise, it doesn't seem to happen.

I'm going to make another sardine project and already have the idea working itself out in my mind. Sardine's are misunderstood and I think I'm going to make all sorts of sardine-y things.

Who knows, if there's any interest, I might even create a pattern for these quirky little fellows.

  7. This is such an adorable little quilt! I might just have to make one like it because my mom loved sardines and it would keep her "hanging around" with me!!

  8. Omg, this is so cute. I don't look at these being sardines, but trout. I live in WI, USA. I live with fishermen and would love to make this. I also have a lot of Tula's fabric and vintage rick rack.

    1. There will be a pattern coming soon. I got the idea for this quilt from my recent holiday in Portugal where they fish for sardines, though I daresay they're quite a bit bigger than the ones used for bait.

    1. Thanks Fiona. I'm quite pleased with how it turned out. Now the tricky part is making sure the kids keep their hands off it when they reach for the fridge. Hah!

  14. That's such an amazing place for a wall hanging and such beautiful fish. I'm ashamed to say that if it was next to my fridge, I think it would have a few splatters on it - we regularly seem to drop things in my house! I'm tempted to make a long thin quilt for somewhere safer now though. x
