Stitches + Craft + Quilting Shows

I love quilt shows. Not a surprise really.

This past weekend, I dragged hubby with me to the Stitches & Craft Show which was held at Rosehill (in Sydney).

The event coordinators cottoned onto the “bored husband” aspect of these types of shows, so they set up an area (outside in the covered area) which was all about woodworking and metal working with demonstrations and things for sale.

I didn’t attend this show last year, but did in 2011 and I have to admit that it’s a lot smaller, than the last time I attended.

Hubby was soon out of sight, getting involved in the wood working exhibition and I was free to take my time looking at everything on display.

Fabric, Lace, Paper Craft, Beading, Sugar Craft – they were all represented.
There was a quilt display at the end of the hall. It was the Twelve by Twelve – International Art Quilt Challenge.

They were amazingly detailed little quilts. I loved the idea of the challenge and the fact that each quilt artist’s quilt was displayed in the same order, in each challenge. Does that make sense?

These images below better describe what I mean:

I was particularly drawn to a couple of the mini quilts. The details was AMAZING!!

The Twelve by Twelve International Art Quilt Challenge will be on display at the Australasian Quilt Convention in Melbourne in April 2013.

I’m hoping to attend AQC - I think it’s the best quilt event in Australia. Now let’s see if hubby’s work roster is kind enough to let us travel down to Victoria for a few days.

Are any of my Aussie friends heading to AQC this year? Perhaps we can organise a bloggers coffee catch up at the event?

In other quilting news, did you know that on 16 March, it is International Quilting Day? I must organise to make that day all about quilting!

Alex Anderson and Ricky Tims, hosts of The Quilt Show, want quilters, sewers and crafters to help celebrate International Quilting Day by having a little look at what is going on in today's quilting world.

They are opening up free access to over 140 of their shows from their www.thequiltshow.com website beginning Friday, March 15, through Sunday, March 17. If you have never had the opportunity to watch The Quilt Show, make sure you take some time to sit and watch during the weekend.

You will be inspired. Absolutely inspired. Alex and Ricky are not only the hosts of the show, but such wonderful quilting ambassadors and they have so much knowledge and tonnes of great ideas to share with us.

Oh and there will be terrific prizes from companies we know and love like Bernina, GAmmill, Superior Threads, AccuQuilt, C&T Publishing, RJR Fabric.
Ricky and Alex will have gift baskets to give away too.

The grand prize is a new Bernina 550QE sewing machine! I'd love one of these. Wouldn't you?

  1. Oh I was there on the weekend too! I have to say it was a bit of a disappointment - much smaller than when I last went (2009) and a lot of... daggy stuff, for want of a better word! There were a few quilting stands which were lovely but not a lot that inspired me. I did LOVE the 12x12 quilts though - the detail was amazing!! And of course I did end up buying a few things :) I chatted to Saffron Craig - Aussie fabric designer who I hadn't heard about before so that was nice.

I'd love to be in Melbourne, but will stick with the quilt show in Darling Harbour in June!

  2. I popped over to Saffron Craig's stand, but she was busy with other customers. Did you see her Scrappy Trip Along quilt? Sooooo beautiful!
